Its not tranditional. But I like the idea of it, its small and out off the way. It's 1/2 of a rack and pinion steering set up? I've seen them up close and even mounted. Who has driven one or any info. would be great. Thanks,BS
I wish I had a picture, but I had a friend who bought a car built by another friend, both passed away now, that was a real home brewed hot rod, a Nailhead powered T put together in the late 60's that had a half R&P that was huge, the wheel was nearly level with the rack running fore and aft with a bell crank up front and side steer. I never rode in it but they both said it drove****s at a hundred per and better. Paul
Thats cool Paul. Was it a home built R&P set-up then. Because I thought these 1/2R&P are kinda new in the last two or so years? Thanks, BS
I've got an article at home on building one from the late sixties, I think. I believe it's in one of the old petersen how-to books and used an MG gear. The only bad thing about it was that it forced a vertical steering location.
I'm a little lost there Swedie-pie. I thought you were gonna use a straight axle front end. Do people use a rack & pinion with a solid front axle? I thought they were for Mustang II type stuff......are you going Mustang II on us? Another thing..... Your truck is fenderless. Is that R&P gonna fit in? Just wondering about what yer up to.... Better get crakin' on that thing.....
i'm lost too, are you going to use this as a sprint style steering gear with the travel of the rack going along the wheelbase instead of a right angle box? or use it in a rack position across the track width with a draglink conecting the two spindles? i think it would be cool in a sprint style setup, hide the thing just inside the taper of the rails and then protrude the link through the rail up to the spindle or do a small blister on the side of the cowl. now the complicated system of pulleys and levers needed to get wheel rotation to the spline may be an engineering marvel. shed some light on this swede.
BS, it was an altered one out of a truck with one end hacked off. VonTinkler, the rack with one leg works fine mounted like a conventional box, the problem you're thinking of is when both ends are used and the rack is frame mounted. as the suspension moves up and down the toe will go in and out. this can be avoided by mounting the rack to the axle... Paul
The one in the pic is a "new" unit,to be used as a cross steer. It is sold as a direct replacement for the Vega box. And priced about the same. But something tells me it also fits another application,at least in part. The housing is Aluminum, but the mounting bracket is steel. The company making them specializes in rack and pinions for OEM and specialty markets. They will also build custom racks. You can find their ad in your favorite Gold Chaner Rod magazines.
I saw one of those at a show,he had it on a SA and the owner said it was way better than the old Vega box.Not trad but it would make a smooth driver.
that looks like the photo from Speedway,A buddy just mounted one on his '32 roadster, Had no room for the vega cross steer because his ford oil pan interfered so he tried that and derect replacement for the vega and still has room for the steering linkage.
