Projects Has anyone had good luck selling a vehicle here? Pros/Cons?

I've bought and sold several here over the years with no issues. Just make sure your ad is very specific, tells everything about the car, positive and negative, and tons of photos. Writing a thorough enough ad will keep your headaches to a minimum.

Not to hijack the thread, but I wrote two articles dealing with the process of buying and selling old cars based off of experiences I've had. You can read them if you get bored:

SELLING MADE EASY (Or At Least Less Hard) – ironandsteele
BUYING MADE EASY (Or at Least Less Hard) – ironandsteele

Some of it may seem forward, but there are some good reminders in there.

One benefit of listing a car for sale on this site is that you're already putting yourself ahead by getting the ad in front of people who are specifically interested in these types of cars. Craigslist, Facebook, etc. you're putting yourself out there to a broad group of yoyos that want to trade you their Toyota rock crawler and a bag of meth.

Never a car but I've bought and sold parts here on the HAMB and the Barn with never any problems. Some parts went to Europe and down under as well. I've also used Craigslist and FB. Only issue with CL and FB is all the scammers but they're easy to ignore.

How can Facebook give you a 1099 if the transaction doesn't take place on Facebook? Never sold there and don't intend to...asking for a friend. I understand Ebay and PayPal since they are accepting payment for you.

I've sold five cars here on HAMB. None were listed very long. Delivered one to Florida and one to Huston but buyers came for the other three and drove them home. So, I've had a good run here. Parts on the other hand tend to move more slowly.

  7. Sold my Henry Ford 32 5 window about a year ago. Was only on the cl***ifieds for a few weeks and then went to its new home. It’s now been sold again after a ton of work that I barely could even comprehend, let alone complete. Thanks Boss for having this great site for all of us!

Man they don’t joke around here, they deleted post just for showing a pic of the 69 truck. Good to know. Well I guess it goes without saying it’s about the right buyer showing up.

There are cars in the cl***ifieds that have been there that long. The price doesn't change, the add doesn't change, no fresh photos, nothing. One guy I reached out to and offered what I thought was a reasonable price, he didn't agree. That was years ago, I bought something else and have been enjoying it, his car is still in the cl***ifieds and he still bumps it up every month or so.

Check out 67-72chevytrucks..com. your ad will fit right in there.

The Hamb cl***ifieds are great because they’re free and will put your car in front of a qualified audience. But folks here are pretty experienced and knowledgeable, especially when it comes to project cars. In general, when a Hamber sees a project car, he doesn’t let his vision of what it could someday become cloud his perception of what it currently is. He has a good understanding of how much time and money it takes to reach the end goal, and expects the car to be priced accordingly.

If you’re searching for the starry-eyed dreamer who will overpay for potential, you need to fish different waters. But understand that those waters are full of junk fish that will peck at your bait incessantly while you wait for your starry-eyed whale.

I don't know if the cars I've listed on the HAMB have sold off the listing or not. They've sure had good exposure and several times have sold several months after the listing has ended.

He makes some serious points in that first paragraph. Write up in the add being specific as to what you are selling. Good high quality photos with no freaking clutter around what you are trying to sell. showing photos if it in a dark cluttered garage with an inch of dirt on it does not add barn find value. It says you are too freaking lazy to dig it out, roll it out, clean it up and take decent photos without junk around it or in the background. If it is sitting outside in the weeds mow the damned weeds or move it to where there are no weeds and clutter.

Ot but back 20 something years ago I bought my Sailboat off Ebay for half of what the outboard with it would sell for. Guy posted it on Ebay with some horrid photos and a real vague discription. I made a can't get hurt bid and got it. It cost a little over twice what I paid for the boat to build a trailer to haul it out of the frame of an old travel trailer but I still had less than 1K in it in 2004 dollars.

I've sold a few cars on FB in the past few years but the last one drew more flakes than the cerial aisle at Walmart. Clearly stated in the add that it either had to have the engine rebuilt or replaced but because it was shiny red I had about five people wanting to drive it home and one gal wanting to pick it up and head to California in it. She wasn't going to get far with that cracked head or blown headgasket.

I sold one here, took a beating but guess the end result was to sell it. CL & FB are like most say, not the crowd to sell to. Selling parts here has been harder to sell. Shipping? Who knows.

And to illustrate the "how not to" side of this, check out these photos:

#1 Thank you to Ryan and all the mods for making this place what it is.

I've sold plenty of parts successfully on the HAMB. You can see some of what I've sold over the last few years by clicking my profile, then post/threads started by me. Looks like I either deleted the older posts or they were lost in the site update years ago because I know I've sold more than that.

I clearly mark my items SOLD once transaction completed but leave them up to help anyone searching to see real world sell price, not "asking" price.

I suggest any buyer/seller read Ryan's rules and tips. Just plain good reading material.

I appreciate an Alliance Member for a buyer of my stuff and will always give them a discount on shipping as a thank you for their support of my favorite site.

I have sold several cars from this site, two of them going to Brazil. Hundreds of parts sold here as well along with dozens of engines. I prefer pickup from my garage as it usually leads to more stuff sold that the buyer didn't know he needed. and I always offer free beer on pickup!

This is a great site for selling items to folks who actually know something about our cars. It sometimes takes awhile but the plus is that you often get some pleasant and interesting folks who become friends.

I responded to an ad on the HAMB wanting a 37 Ford cowl, no firewall. I had exactly that. He offered me rocker panels for a Brand X car and I shipped him the cowl. He sent rockers that did not fit Brand X but are for a 55 Chevy which I am happy to get so I guess it was a good swap, even though the other guy lied.

How does Facebook know what I sold anything for? eBay, I’m sure will do that.

I did a straight across trade, hot rod for hot rod, with a fellow HAMBer. A couple of "stand-up guys" doing a deal usually works out well...and the majority of HAMBers appear to be stand-up guys.

In order to ship, Facebook similar to eBay. wants you to use their service; which requires your info and a bank account. You can avoid that, by just posting in you listing , "will ship, message for rate".
Other than that, just more Facebook hate yammering.

  30. I sold a car 3 years ago. The buyer was overseas. He did what he was supposed to and so did I. I tend to think that when I sell something, it must have been the best for the best price. :)
