As far as that goes, the "duntov" and the "3030" are two COMPLETELY different cams anyway. The "duntov" is the cam that was used in FI and 270HP 283's, and its about 20 degrees shorter and about 8 years older than the "140" or 30/30. But most HAMBers dont seem to care much (or more likely even know) about that "little" distinction. A 30/30 has no business whatsoever in a 283.

30-30 vs the Crane in a "Simulation", I know we don't race dynos or simulations but just bench racing talk. Using his 327 Specs;with better than period heads. Crane is on right. I did a few more cams but I'll wait on those.

Barely steerable/interstate travel by that stage of 850 cfm, 4.88 (spool?) ect. So this again becomes all out or 80%+ drag car. The OQ would be a broader, beginning (real street) middle (hot street) and the aforementioned all out. By the time this one runs it course of pro engine builder's and heavy street racer types it will again become a piss match, yes? They seem without fail to do so. E G O. P R I D E. But in amongst all the male bravado, some good nuggets of tech can a emerge.

I used the Patriots published flow numbers. They are similar 245/188@500. The CARB is definitely too small for max performance. Not mentioned is the higher pumping loss of the 30-30 around 4000-6000 RPM. The Crane is flowing less air but making more power, look at the Vol eff%.

buchbrad, I use to run a 30/30 years ago. It worked well with stock heads. very mild lope. you may look at the duntov 097 (098?) cam. If I remember right it may have been a solid lifter cam. A little more radical. I'm sure a company can grind one for you with same specs.

Of more interest to the original post, here are the 2 cams simulated. The Howard 30-30 vs the Summit Hydraulic. I'd pick the Summit for the described usage,

Had a new 63 fuelie Vette, Close ratio 4 speed W/ 4.10 gear. This motor was rated at 360 HP and the valve lash was set at 8 and 18. In 1964 they went to the cam set at 30/30. The 62 motor was the same as the 63.
The 8/18 cam had better low end and midrange and gave up a few HP at the top. I drove several 64s with the 30/30 cam and liked the 8/18 cam better on the street. Very fast car in 1963. JMO;)

A look at the Lunati 272-282 at the standard 112 LSA and a 108 LSA both with the intake at 108.

    A 780 gets you 10 more HP.

Not sure, are you suggesting that I called these period, or was your question addressed to someone else? These are the 2 cams he originally asked about :)

Ah, I see. I assumed that these were in reference to my suggested changes to Sams friends '55. Carry on.

You were incorrect in assuming I pin pointed thou as suggesting 4.88's......(rolls eyes, happy face, ect) Thee PRIDE thing is very much driven (!) in every way, yes? Chip away at the stone. What autos where these past combos used in? Light/Medium/Heavy (no pun).

It's hilarious to see some commenting that there are better options out there. Of course there are. You can buy new vehicles and modern engines but that isn't what this site is about.

If you go more modern, it would be best to install a roller cam and gain horsepower simply from less friction loss as well as being able to open and close valves much quicker.

Whoa George, do not flatter your self. I need not 'follow you around'. And no talk of 'smack' on the tech. You were given credit where credit was due several years ago on being a wrench/tuner. It is when you criticize the HAMB and it's members whom do not have your savvy. Easy, this area is your expertise. And this round is a lock for you. Now to return the volley, let's hit the hills and weights for a complete 180. Explain your carb theory.

Sure a heck of a lot of posts from a guy who doesn't post on cam threads and was staying off this one! ;)

I personally have used the old 30-30 on 3-4 engines from my first build using it in a 283 in my '55 Chev gasser in 1970, to other 327 and 350 Chev small blocks.
The 283 in my '55 gasser was a sweet running engine with the 30-30, but also not anywhere near stock. I built it with 11:1 TRW forged pistons, a highly modified pair of 1.94 heads, polished crank, balanced rotating assembly, ported and matched Chev Corvette aluminum dual quad intake, with twin AFB carbs.
The '55 ran low 12's with that 283 and the 30-30 cam, and wound easily to 7,000 grand with the Duntov still pulling well. I also drove this car regularly on the street with 4.10 rear gears, and an old M22 four speed, and considering it was mostly a strip car it did well on regular street driving too.

  28. A 30 30 is my favorite cam. You can run it with stock valve springs. I do pin the rocker studs. I set the valve lash at 28 & 28 with the engine running at operating temp. I never run a tach I let it make however much rpm as it makes. The engine pictured is a 69 large journal 327. Stock bore and pistons. The heads are 57 fuelies that have been ported polished CCed and larger valves. Its has a 30 30 cam. I degree the cam straight up center the overlap. The factory installed dual 380 CFM carter WCFB carbs on 265,s for 760 CFM. Why would 750 CFM be to big for a 283 or 327? There may be better cams but I dont really care, I build what I prefer.:D Old Wolf

    Point taken.

  30. On my 327 I wound up with dual 625 CFM afbs and it runs & idles on both carbs at 1000 RPM. no progressive linkage. At WOT the intake noise is horrendious. I cant hear the intake noise as much with the hedders uncorked. Old Wolf
