    Hell yeah! 9 mile!
The camaro your talking about might have been Scooter? Still got and he still runs it. I remember Buddy McAfee and his 55, that gasser 54 with the blown big block, and a lot of others. Good times...'

I ran a big block 56 Chevy truck, bright yellow. At penwell the best I ever did was 13:56, but I swear it was faster at 9 mile...=)

I actually got a ticket for drag racing in about 1971. The cop came in the greasing spoon I worked at and reduced the charge to exibition of acceleration. Managed to out run the sheriff a couple times...60-70 mph down dirt roads at midnight with the headlights off. Nothing but the light colored road down the middle and the dark hedgeapple trees on the sides of the road and moonlight. Yeah, the asshole pucker-factor was quite high on those nights. It scares the shit out of me when I think about it now...pretty stupid and I'm not bragging, just relaying the story.

not really a car for HAMB but heres a pic of my T/A 2 years ago.the car was bought for me by mom and dad almost 20 years ago.I still have it.the pic was taken at a friend house a few town over from me.the car was driven on the street with 3" pipes/flows. dumped at the rear axle.29"x15 slicks.Built to the hilt 355 Chevy with a 400HP NOS plate system, set at 250 hp.with a 4 speed & 456 rear end.the car was gutted in the front end, look at how high it sits.with 90/10 shocks.it would pull about 12" of air under the front tire without the NOS.never got messed with by the cops other than one that read my tag and pulled me over to check out my car.my back Ky tags reads RACEME.

    Avenue P...Newark, NJ
At various times, have seen Scott
Schaffiroff, Levi Holmes, and Pat Musi there.
The fastest cars looked like pieces of shit.
Unreal to see a 68 Buick 225 run as if it could do 9's.
Big money went down there, scary.

I remember going up to Philly on the weekends. Up around JFK. People would haul cars out on trailers. There were so many people racing, the only thing the fuzz could do was flood the streets by turning on all the fire hydrants. It was pretty nuts. Back in Bear, De we raced Sandy Bray Rd. and Lums Pond here or there.

  8. Thats before I was born! That place is where the cops hang out now to do their paperwork!

Too bad the nearest track is Cayuga (toronto motorsports park) and is about 1 hours away. St. Thomas is almost as close.

There used to be a good spot around me up untill a few years ago. There would be 50-100 cars on a given weekend throughout the summer. Some pretty serious stuff would show up on a regular basis. I ran a 10.5 tired 71 Nova SS that went 10.33 on the juice. 388, 13:1 , Dart CNC'd Pro 1's, wilson ported Super Victor, NX/Hvh plate. Nx Maximizer, Coan pro th400 w/brake, ATD 8" Converter. And LOTS of other fun stuff but that's enough of a list to get the point accross!!!!!!!!! LOL

This is REALLY stupid, but when we were in high school we started the "100mph club". We would run up to 100mph on a city street, usually main street in our small town, at around 3 or 4am. It doesn't sound that fast, but on a small city street with buildings close to you it felt like we were in an X-wing fighter swooping down to shoot the death star...hahaha. It was one hell of a rush.

I've always said adrenaline is by far my preferred drug of choice.

  13. Poncho62, I hung around and raced out off the Jane & 401 Harveys in the mid to late 70's. Used to race at Jane & Major Mac, right where wonder land is. My uncle hung there in the late 60"s to early 70's.

  14. Another one of my street race cars from the late 70's. 56 Anglia, Dana 44 rear, engine set back, i drove from the back seat area. It's pictured here in the staging lanes at "County" (O.C.I.R.) during the week, where me and my buddies would rent the track for $35 a car, and tune for the Saturday nite street races. This particular car NEVER lost me a street race. I raced some very "Bad" cars with this. Trouble was, their cars wouldn't "work" on the street. My car would almost "hook" in the rain
    [IMG]

  15. Another one. This had rubber floor mats (Taxi/Cop Car), and a column shift. I had a 12 bolt in it, but i took a 10 bolt cover, filled with Bondo, and taped it overnite to the rearend. I'd tell people, hey, it's only a 10 bolt to suggest no "real" money had been spent on the car. All that looked under the car acknowledged it as a 10 bolt, not noticing there were NO BOLTS in any of the 10 holes. Funny. Although not very fast (mid 13's), it too never lost a race. A sleeper of sorts

Racing is kinda like fighting,if you have never lost, you havent been in more than one .

  17. Gratiot was on the sides of MANY cool race cars when i was a kid

  18. Groucho is my new HAMB Hero...

The best times we had were out in Turlock running on Montevista where in dead ended into Montpilliar... mostly 12 second cars... some11's and a few 10 second rides. The serious guys would go down to race in Fireball... 9 and 8 second rides duking it out. I heard some dude in a '56 Chevy rolled it, and then guys up where we were were then less interested in going.
I raced my '55 (the blue and white one pictured) when it had a 383 in it. It ran a 12.94 best on street tires through the mufflers. That doesn't sound that fast, but it was when you consider it would hook just damn near as good on the street as it did the track. People used to ask me why I'd race such a nice car... I'd tell them "it's the only car I have that is fast!"

Then we put the motor in the '66 Nova... I sold the car to my buddy Steve, and he put a solid lifter 350 in it... and we put a 200 shot of squeez to it. Damn, it hauled ass then! We ran it out on California... whish is a road that runs into Paradise road on the outskirts of Modesto. And out on SanteFe for fun against Steve's neighbors who were all street racers... yea, that car could get air under the front tires on the street! Anyways, it was always fun to see the drama, the fast cars... and sometimes the stupidity. Definately a rush when you're running 120mph on a two lane country road next to a car that is screaming along beside you... I'd never condone it, I wouldn't do it again... but I'm, glad I have that experience under my belt.

The red '63 Dodge was a car I built for a good friend's dad... ran 10.60's when I was done with it. When I delivered the car to him, he wasn't expecting it until a month or two later than when I brought it to him. I unload it off the trailer, warm it up about a mile from his place out in the country, and then rip through the gears with the push button! He heard the noise over the cotton fields, came out... and saw me blast by his place in 3rd gear... probably the most nervous I had ever been on the street with a fast car. Mostly because it wasn't mine, the guy had just paid me some bucks to build it for him, it was his pride and joy... and a member of his family since his son was a year old! But that didn't keep me from putting my foot into it!

And people think these fucking rat rods are fast... yea... right...

    Sam.

HA HA!!! We still hit up nine mile and county line!! That's incredible that somebody knew about it..... The police are out there pretty heavy most of the time, but you can still get a few runs in. A lot of people come out there with the car trailered and big cash exchanges hands....

Grew up in Pasadena,CA and(seriously)street raced on Riverside Drive in Glendale-----Anyone who was around in the late 60's and early 70's will remember a certain '65 Shelby Mustang that ate L-79 Chevelles on a regular basis. The car was a freak and it got to the point where not too many people would mess with it----I was making $80 a week working at a gas station and $200/night street racing.I made the most off the guys that said Ford's were pigs and didn't run.Great fun and no one got hurt

There are still some hard core street racers in parts of NC. 1/4 mile races with guys betting thousands pn the races. Now it mostly 80s 90s fox mustangs with alot of nitrous and built motors. Some Camaros and Novas. One guy has a mean S10 that they say leaves as hard on the street as he does at the track.

These guys will trailer cars down there and back them off drive down the road and line em up.

  25. New Jersey is pretty big with street racing. Back in the day, and still is now adays.

My father was a real big street racer in the 70s. He ended up fliping his camaro with my mother in the back seat comming back from a race. It was wet, and he had the slicks on....

Nowadays, i always get the opportunity to race with the imports and newer muscle. Everyone sees me ( younger guy) driving something loud and old, and wants to go for it...

Im too smart to race on the streets. Ive heard so many horrible horror storys to have a full race on the streets. 60 footer, ok!.

But im spinning those bias, all the way to 100 feet... =) hahahah

    please excuse the exhaust leak....

  26. I didn't do a whole lot but I got in a couple of good ones in my 56 in the mid 80's. An older guy in town, Santa Barbara, had one of the new body style Camaros . He must of spent a fortune on it because it already had a blown 400 inch smallblock and a 9" rearend. It was charcoal color. Anyway I raced him twice and beat him both times. Just chance meetings on the street. I was so happy to beat that high dollar car with my $2,500 home built Chevy. When I put the 56 up for sale less engine he bought it.

In 1973, the year I graduated High School, I had a '64 Chevelle with a 12.5:1 compression, rect. port 396 with the factory "ZL-1" cam and an M-22 Muncie 4-speed shifted by a Mr. Gasket V-Gate shifter. The car had been an old drag car so the rear fenders had been cut for tire clearance and the rear suspension had been changed to leaf springs with lakewood traction bars. The rear end was a '57-64 Pontiac/Olds with 3-series gears in it. Unfortunately, the car attracted alot of attention by law enforcement and South Dakota had inspections at the time and I had to change the rear suspension back to stock. It just so happened that the old Ford dealer, (Harding Motors) had a '65 Chevelle with no motor or trans in it with a 12-bolt rear end and 396 badges on it. I bought the car for $50, took the rear end and suspension and all the 396 badges off the car and sold what was left to a guy who turned it into a stock car racer. Yeah, I know 'NOW' what that car was. I used air bargs in the coil springs to get it up off the tires and ran it that way with L-60-15's in the back. I never raced it at the track...ALL my racing was on the street. We used to "go to the drive-in" where there was a long straight patch of road or out "to the dam" (Oahe) and race. I only lost one race when a motor mount broke the distributor struck the firewall and broke the distributor cap, that was against a '70 Camaro Z-28 with a 427 and drag slicks and that was only by a fender. I originally built the car using a LS-6 Chevelle low rise rect port intake to keep everything under the stock hood but eventually stuck an Edelbrock Tarantula intake on it and had to cut a hole in the hood. I put an old Mopar pro stock style hood scoop on it and ran it that way for a couple years eventually selling the car without the engine. Most of the people who challenged me to a race were just wanting to see the car run so I'd leave hard smoking my tires and usually pass them with both tires blazing in 2nd gear. I'd feather the gas and shift at around 7500 RPM and leave two strips of rubber the whole length of the "quarter'. Those were fun days and I'd like to build something radical like that again...stripped, no front fenderwells, no heater or back seat, big compression, big cam. I'll see if I can get a picture of the car posted soon. Thanks.

  29. I street raced all the time, couldn't get enough of it. Not on public packed roads, but deserted industrial areas.

    1980's I raced this...

In the 1990's I raced this
