Heard this a few years back!!!
Has anyone... every installed a 9 3/8" center section with a 2.50 gear from a late 60's Mercury Convertible into a 9" Ford 31 spline rear housing.
Will it work?... and ... Are the yokes the same?
If so does anyone have one I can buy.
    Thanks in advance.

dont know about the 250 gears, but i had one that was 3 or 3 1/4 to 1 and the ring gear would not clear the opening in the housing. it was 28 spline btw

A 9 and 3/8th housing has a small area on the mounting flange clearanced out for the ring gear to slip past when installing. A nine inch housing can be clearanced to fit, it would take a grinder and about 5 minutes.

  4. I installed a 68 Merc wagon 28 spline 9 3/8" diff in my 32's early 60's pickup rear axle housing.

    Dropped right in.
    2.75 ratio.

What you have to watch is companion flange length.

When I went to a 9" diff with 3.70 gears I had to make a new driveshaft due to the 9 3/8" companion flange was 1" longer than the 9" companion flange.

Sorta wasted a nicely built and balanced driveshaft, but I hung onto it and after it gets cut 1" it'll go into the 31.
