I would like to polish the pot metal door strikers on my '62 Bel Air wagon. I believe I once saw a video on how to remove the pin, spring and bumper, but I'm unable to find it again. Has anyone taken one of these apart recently and can describe the process? I'd like to keep the originals. Thanks!
Since zink is not going to hold the shine very long in comparison to aluminum or SS, I wouldn't disassemble it, I would just give it a cursory polish job with buffer wheel and Dremel, screw it down with polished hardware and call it good.
After getting them clean of grease, soak them in a container of vinegar. Let it do it's thing until you're happy with results. Good luck!
I suspect that the inserts for the 2 bottom screws are steel or a harder metal than the main casting. I'm surprised the finish matches fairly well. It's possible that the insert is plated and if so, any polishing may quickly burn through and not have a happy result.
