Hi everyone. I'm looking to purchase from an eBay supplier an electronic distributor that has the P/N of "428BLHEI". It's for my daughter's 1961 Ford Galaxie with a 390. Has anyone ever used one of these brands. HCR Products is the company name. Here's the link to it on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-FE-HEI...l-352-360-390-427-428-Big-Block-/201044654190 Thanks. Any input is appreciated.
Looks like a Made in China MSD knock off distributor I was checking out at a swap meet this summer. Appeared to be well built, but what scared me off was thought of getting a cap and rotor for it at a later date. I doubt MSD parts would fit..quality of the electronics also worried me. EDIT , my apologies, missed the HEI cap on my phone! Definitely not a MSD knock off!
Besides the offshore origin, I'd worry about the 'hardened chromoly steel gear'; if running a iron flat tappet cam, that will eat the distributor gear in short order. And these look butt-ugly sticking up on the front of Ford motors... I've used stock Ford Duraspark units with a MSD box with great success. You can even swap the electronic innards from a later dizzy into your stock one.
Just my opinion but I think they look hideous on a Ford. I use a Ford HEI distributor and an MSD box. I remove the vacume advance and epoxy up the hole. Then paint it with castblast paint and it looks like a dual point.
Leave that HEI crap for the GM guys. If you don't want to use the later Ford Duraspark, put a proper looking Pertronix distributor on it with a small cap. Looks correct, functions much better than stock.
