Back in the early nineties, the monument company I worked at had a $40. hr rate and people thought I was ripping them off.
Rims for $5,doors/hood/trunk lids for $15-20. ea and headers or manifolds $20 pr.
I taped off openings, manifolds and baffles, any areas that might not like the grits attention too.
Most of the prices were less, depending on condition,i.e. grease,50 layers of paint, time to slow the media/air mix to prevent warping.

It was like pulling teeth to get the customers to come pick up the finished product before it started rusting again?

Pick two, because you can't have all three. Seems like the going rate to me from what I've been quoted.

I had a complete truck body and all sheet metal parts blasted for 800.00. The guy did a great job and I would go to him again but too far of a drive for something small. I just got a quote from another shop to sand blast my steel wheels (rust only) was 25-30 each. Now I think he was high on dope so I will do them myself. If the price is too much for you to pay buy the stuff and do it yourself. When your done you will have the tools paid for and cant be mad at anybody else but yourself if it turns out like ****.

I know this thread is about the price of "media" blasting, but why not use electrolysis? It's what they use at redi-strip. Dig a big hole in your backyard, line it with plastic and fill it with water (and follow the instructions). That'll get rid of all the rust. If you think it still needs to be blasted they'll just be doing cleanup. I'd definitely do it with doors and fenders (in fact, I do).

I do my own cleanup using walnut shell for media. No silicosis for me (and it's relatively cheap)!

I guess I did pretty well here in west central Florida. I had my '39 Ford coupe completely blasted, inside and out (with black beauty) for $550. That was just last fall and did not include a hood 'cause I didn't have a good one. Guy did a great job. Mike

I've blasted my own stuff and paid the best shop in Connecticut to blast other items. Paying a top ranked shop is FAR better. Don't even think of blasting your own stuff if you can see a neighbors house. If you can taste sand/media the mask you are wearing is no good, and your lungs are not replaceable.

  10. If you're doing one yourself, what stops you from not bothering to mess with places like the middle of the roof that almost never rust, unless the paint wears clean off?

Seems to me that would save a few bucks. Probably not an option on the Model A stuff though.
