Was asked to help put a price on this car, I'm more of a Chevy guy plus my mind is stuck in the 80's anyway. Still has flathead (seems stuck), clear Iowa title in owners name. Thanks for any opinions.

  4. It's a 2dr, that's a +......but if it's rusted there..(pics), you ain't seen nothing yet........ Sorry, no opinion on price.
I see a hand full, and someone has to know the car, and be committed for the long haul......

A bit rough around the edges, but not nearly as rusty as some that I've seen get fixed. Looks pretty complete, clean title helps. I'd probably price this in the $7K range.

It sounds like someone else is trying to sell it and sees you as the local expert.
I'm there with Squablow, I'd start at 7k and let cash green money speak loudly.
If it has a clear up to date title in the seller's name that is worth a fair part of that 7K.
The flathead won't mean much to most guys wanting to build a custom but it is trading material.

  8. 7K???? Boy, I must be stuck in the '60s.... I'd say $2,500 tops, but what do I know?

  10. I think @Squablow is pretty close with the asking price .

but Mr. @28phonebooth is closer to the actual selling price .

my guess would be $2500 - 3500 selling price in the end .

But list it high , alls you need is one guy that “ wants it “ you can always go lower on price , hard to go up !

  11. That is a hard one. It is the right car, but the condition is tough, and they always seem worse once you own them. You always hear buy the best one you can find/afford for your projects. The purchase price will be minuscule compared to the final cost of the build. Might be a good candidate for helping in a 4 door to 2 door conversion, but no one likes to see their project end up as a parts car. Advertise it well, it will likely end up as a full custom, ownership helps, move it along before it starts to melt away. From what I have read on here, Squablow is in the game and gives good advice. If I was buying I wouldn’t give 7 g for it, but if it was mine I wouldn’t sell it for that, so it likely is a reasonable number.

Man, lots of work and money needed there. Dad and I used to restore wood boats and dad always said "sometimes you can get a Chris Craft for free, and still pay too much...."

In the mid west here that is still a good solid buildable car.

Build it? Drive it! Here in Maine you get an antique plate and throw a mexican blanket on the seat and you've got a nice summah cah, Bub!

have seen rough Mercs here in California less than $7K. looks like a full project that will take a lot of time and cash. often best to pay more in the beginning for a better project. up to each individual what is best for them.

This one sold locally here recently for $6400 plus 10% buyer premium. Not a real comparable car, seeing as this one is chopped and has a 348, but it was also a non-runner, with some parts missing and also a building collapsed on top of it. It's hard to tell but the roof skin is almost touching the top of the front seat. It also needed some rust repair, although it was less rusty than the '51 in question. I'm not sure which one would be easier to fix.

Rockers, floors and lower quarters are needed on the '51 but other than that, it looks very good to me. I think some of you guys are remembering the 2003 prices and not the 2023 price.

  17. Something I’ve noticed in the last 5 years ( pre pandemic and post ). Is old car prices are like the stock market .

    stuff was reasonable .

then a plague engulfed us all . Prices went squirrely for a few years as folks were either in a financial bind and needed cash and other folks were bored and looking for a hobby or project . Stuff was selling for insane prices up here in southern Ontario .

in the last year I’ve seen the market not really slow down but prices drop back down to more “ sane” levels .

The last few months up here there is a 42 Willy’s sedan that’s been for sale , top notch build , all the right stuff and quality work . But it’s a sedan .
Easily a 100,000 plus build when it was done .
And it would probably be worth that or close to it if it was a coup.

the price is ever so slowly dropping month over month . I think it will sell for around 50k if the seller will let it go for that . It’s a steal for someone . Even at the price he’s asking now , but limited market for a car line that .

Same around here. Things are leveling back off to realistic. People still asking insane prices here and there, but their stuff isn't selling.

  20. this one is much more reasonable and easier to get up and running. a lot of stuff is just dirty but a lot has been figured out already and it was a modified runner at some point.

The project posted by the OP is really a whole mess. I would say 5k or under. even with the title.
