Well I guess I'm partial to my old flatty but I started driving in the early '50's. Had my '48 Chevy coupe with the 270 Jimmy bored to 292, wild cam, split manifold and 3 Corvette side draft carbs. Street racing was legal in Downtown Dayton, Ohio from light to light as lond as you didn't squeal the tires too much. That Chevy got warped bad by the Oldsmoblies and some of the warmed over Flatties.

Fast forward 50 years and I'm driving a Flattie, with blower and blowing most of the rice burners away. Just a little faster than a '49 Olds )'bout 2 car lengths in a block but lovin every minute of it.

As to reliability my Merc has been to the James Dean Run 7 years, Rebel Run 4 years, and about 3 times a month 120 miles to a cruise-in in ****ord. Been to the Sommernights cruise 3 times and average about 6-7 thousand miles a year on it.

Last year drove 96 miles to Columbus to meet up with Rumbleseat and his '34 roadster (flat head powered.) He left near Denver, drove to Florida, down one coast and up the other to New York, back through Pensylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota before arriving back home. I think this trip took about 7,000 miles (most of it in hard rain.) He stopped and visited many rodders from the MSN board during his trip. Did have one failure, lost a Bendix somewhere in the east. He had a spare so didn't have to go to the drugstore for parts as he would have for an SBC.

Attached are pictures of out meeting in Columbus.

I put over 30,000 miles in two years on my 51 ford with a flathead.... Back when it was my only car.

It's not rebuilt or anything, just a crusty old Flathead, that runs like a top.

I used to comute from Milwaukee, to the shop, which was an 70 mile round trip, daily. I drove the **** out of that car. I drove it mostly year around too... only in really big snow storms I would park it... I drove it to Mn and Chicago several times.....

Like anything, if you treat it with respect and know its limitations a Flathead will be as dependable as any other motor.......

Even though I've barely even started that ford in the last couple years... I still wouldn't hesitate to drive it anyplace....

That Being said, highboys are for Basketball players, and the only real Hot Rod engine is an early Olds. Period.

All other motors are weak in comparison.... hahahaha

The 286 I just put in my dads 40 pulls very strong in low and med range rpm’s and in fact will smoke the 800s for a good 40’.
I seriously doubt that people waited for the overhead valve V8 to come out before they drove across country.
52 years since the end of production and people are still running V8 fords and still making new parts. If they were as bad as some of you think they all would have been cracked and s****ed years ago.

  8. What a **** job. You were even being cool and didn't want to rip him off.

    It's all about KARMA, bro.
You and he will forget all about this... but someday... he'll get it in the ***, and this will be why.

    Trust in KARMA...

I'd **** it and sell it, too.
Make a ton of dough and throw a party for all your friends.:D

I remember hearing the story of how Henry Ford just finished the first Deuce V-8 and he lamented about how he'd love to go to Plowboy's house and pull up in his driveway but he'd have to wait untill the small block Chevy was invented so the the car would be reliable enough for the trip!
