Good to hear that it runs. This is on of the few '41's I've seen that I could like. Anyone use Gibbs for starting fluid? I saw a hit or miss engine guy use it the other week, says that's all he uses.

Gibbs is THE very best penatrating oil ever, Roadster.com sells it here. I was totally impressed with the H or M guy. He said starting a lot of engines that have set for years he just sprays through the carb to prove they run, eliminating any carb/gastank problems. It's "softer" then regular starting fluid, won't harm in a backfire situation. It smokes a little, and lubes at the same time. And you have to remember too they are hand cranking engines so they want something that works!

zeitler, glad to see you got the old girl running. about the exhaust issues... i do seem to remember that the old flattie has a cracked manifold on the passenger side i think. get a set of Red's tube headers and run duals with Smitty's mufflers, thick wall tube like the others mentioned. nice rrrrrrrRRRRRAAAAAAAP! to it! check the Alliance members for the best deals and availability. you wont regret it

Yeah, but when they are running, LOOK OUT! Those suckers can put out enough horse power to almost move a car.

i looked into reds headers already 150 for that year! and i have determined it needs a fuel pump and master cylinder, so for now those are first prioritys, but exhaust isnt too far down on the list cuz its pouring smoke into the car, im kinda worried though it smoke quite a bit and its a lot of black and a little white!, it seems to idle nice but when its under a load the timming sounds all off!!!! should i retard it or advance it??

Flatheads were good running engines bak in the day, Man I drove my 41 coupe everywhere, It was a BIG improvement from my stocker 30' Model A. things like hydraulic brakes,[that was a biggee]radio, heater, column shift
,synchro gears,Gemmer roller steering, new suspension, antisway, and
panhard bars, sealed beam headlites, dual horns, pressurized radiator, dual pipes, fuel pump, and full pressure oil V8 POWER! However you need to read up on 'em to get familiar with them. No reason that your flatty wont give you good service when its in good shape. They ran good 'bakwhen' and no reason they wont do it again. If it doesnt work out then just install 289. It will bolt in and not overpower the stock drivetrain. and it will still have that 'old car feel', as thats the fun of driving the old cars.

bolt in as far as re working motor mounts, transmission/ trans mount, driveshaft and rear axle?? no way dude thats out of my skill level and i'll admit that the flat head will stay in the car, even if it goes bad i will put another flattie in it!

Well, if you are set on flathead thats good I like 'em.,sometimes they get a little pricy if they need work and lotta guys dont want to spend the bucks. If you use the stock trans, it's easy as putting in a stock flatty. With an adapter, you can bolt in a chevy or ford engine with [clutch / flywheel assembly] right onto the stock trans. Use stock throwout bearing Front motor mounts arent a problem as motor is located and all it then needs are, front mounts which i beleive is available, but if not it shudnt be hard to fab. clutch pedals and linkage are on the trans so it wont need to be fabricated. hook up throttle and accessories etc. On the radiator, just block off a couple of the water connections it has more than enough cooling, you can even use all 6 volt electrics if you use a 6v coil. Fire it up and drive away. i did it on my 32 ford when I was 19.

too much work for a car that is 99.9999999999% complete! if it was a two door i would hot rod it out, but this one is going to be just a cool old cruiser! plus i like the sound of flatheads its growing on me! even though mine sounds like shit right now due to timing is off and i have no exhaust!

hhaha yeh i,ve experienced both sides of that. I only owned one flatty, and it needed an overhaul, worked on some, helped rebuild one. Some ran hot some not so hot, some would pull and some you pulled! Had buddies with flatheads! one had 296" full house duece roadster, I used to borrow, when they were good, they were very, very, good,--- but when they were bad ------they were ugly! --- An oldtime mechanic told me when I wanted to do a ring and valve job, that flatheads were built to till the valves went and then you exchanged the short block. mebbe true mebbe not. but loved the good ones!

Dude, with a little vision, that mordoor would make an absolutely killer rod! I hate, HATE 4 door cars, but these old subs make awesome swapmeet cruisers. Forget those BAGS and LAYIN' FRAME and TUCKIN' TIRE and BODYDROP'n and ...... Sorry, kinda went on a bit of a tangent there....

Anyway, if it were mine, I'd give it a really nice rake, on the deck but a nice rake all the same. Some 6 x 15 Americans all around on some 165 75 15 and 235 80 15 radials. Put the flatty in an older hot rod and put some sort of OHV motor in there along with the trans.

Nothing earth shattering, just a simple, funky hot rod.
