Well the frame in Orange crate was cut into smaller chunks, plated and then put back together with clamps.

I know there is a 32 Ford sedan running around the Portland/Vancouver area with a chrome frame.

...@Taboo56Chevy I believe that is one of those clamps visible in the close up...that sounds crazy that clamps were adequate in tying this together on a Strip Racer let alone a street application...I guess it worked...

Ed Roth's Mysterion, but you need a big hole saw to make it look right.

These multi named Hotrods sure make for a little twisted researching...I gather it was first called 'Blackie' then he smashed into a ChickenCoop where it was referenced as same and it became 'Shish Kebab' after being rebuilt...Sheesh...:D

The shish-kebob came from him tipping it on its side every so often at a show and his pals called it the Shish-Kebob as a joke.

For a while, it was really popular to chrome the roll cages on dragsters, especially the rear engine fuelers, But, NHRA outlawed the practice due to the possibility of hydrogen embritlement occurring. And remember, the Mysterion had many issues with the frame breaking during transport. Surprised willys36 has't jumped in yet, after all, he did build the Mysterion recreation. I have seen several lowriders with chrome frames, and a couple of gold ones, too.

Ok I'll jump in. Mysteion did have a chrome frame but the main frame wasn't the problem. It was the front spring tube that kept braking as I understand. For my clone, i built a 2x4 steel tubing frame with 16ga polished stainless facade bolted over that. The front tubes are 2" sch80 pipe. I found an outfit in Los Angeles that bent them on 6" radius so they aren't going anywhere. The spring cups are forged steel pipe caps so are plenty strong.

Hydrogen embrittlement only affects high strength steel, using bolts as a reference, grade 8 or higher. Normal axles, spindles etc. shouldn't have a problem. Don't know the characteristics of chrome molly used on race car frames, might be susceptible.

Tensile strength of metal when introduced to chrome effects whether hydrogen embrittlement occurs...an interesting note...and love the build pics...

We refer to those as "Randal Clamps" as the builder was Keith Randal.

Yep. It has to do with the amount of carbon in the alloy. There is a maximum threshold wherein the hydrogen molecules cannot move freely thru the steel and lock into spaces between the carbon and iron molecules and reduce ductility. Below that level, the hydrogen molecules move freely through the iron doing no damage. Steel is permeable to the tiny hydrogen molecule.

Only one I ever saw was when I was a kid. My dad was picking up some old Jeep’s from a dairy farmer In the barn we had to pull the out was a Mustang up on some table/ ledge in the barn, tilted up with some poles. Mirror laying flat. Everything, I mean everything on the underside of that car was chrome. I don’t know mustangs well enough if they are full frame, unibody or what, but man, milk must have been profitable in the late ‘60s.

Mustangs have always been unibody, so while that car may have had chrome components it didn't have a frame.

Well, like I said I didn’t know what it had, heck, I was probably 8-10 years old at the time. I guess now being older it was the “under carriage “ that was all chromed.

I would paint it to look like aluminum... Some people blindingly over do it with chrome...

My son used to buy the low rider style magazines. One of the cars he showed me in it was a 63 or 64 Impala with a completely chrome plated frame and suspension components. Gold plated wheels...you know the style. I just pondered how much money someone must have invested in such a car. More than I would have.

There was a stainless steel framed '32 roadster in Pa. about 25 years ago. Blue body if I remember right. Saw it at Macungie car show, Wheels through Time.

Actually that level of coin is put out in many of the adventures we witness here...I many times refer to these Hotrod/Customs as works of Art...A Vision a Cost...Show and go...and yes we all have a Vision of what we want in one and cost certainly is varied...

    HPIM1409_zpse415a015.jpg

...I could see a chrome frame on this the rear tips and front fairings and horns would look sharp in my opinion...Race was a Showy Sport as it evolved...
