On the Sacramento thread it kinda drifted of to jail time and I got to thinking about the times I landed in the hoosgow. At 68 I have landed there three times.....all related to my car! Just wondered if I’m alone on this? Or are there other “ Hot rod jailbirds” out there?

No. But I've driven a few friends to court due to their car.

Almost got arrested because my daughter drove my off topic car and got a ticket and didn't pay it so there was a warrant out for me, the owner! That was a surprise!

Not to jail, but arrested for grand theft auto in my own car, pulled over, guns drawn, cops yelling over speaker, got it straightened out in about 30 minutes.

Sold my car and motorcycle at 20 yrs old and walked for 3 1/2 yrs to get my insurance down due to numerous speeding and exhibition of speed tickets :D

No but I lived in a small town with a one man police department and my father had gone to school with him. One day not very long after I got my drivers license I saw him in our driveway talking to my dad. When he left I asked my father what they were talking about. "He just wanted to know what you were running in that 53 Ford". It slowed me down for a little while.

Not yet but there’s still time.

Gordon, had to laugh about that as something similar happened when my daughter went out of state with my car and I received a summons in the mail. She actually paid the fine on time but for whatever reason, back then they only processed credit card payments once a week and therefore it went delinquent. Have to love government. It was resolved but she was surprised when I asked about the incident....,.,

Not quite, but I stole my dad's 66 Fairlane convertible that he was supposed to give to me when I turned 16, but reneged when my parents got divorced. He ended up suing for the car, but the judge ruled in my favour.

Caught doing 95 on Interstate 40 back in '71, never saw the state trooper who chased me down. I'm from Tennessee, but was in North Carolina. Driving a new 71 Nova that didn't belong to me ( my idiot sister actually loaned it to me for a trip to see my G/F at a festival at UNC ). By myself. 18 years old. Long hair. Tie dyed shit all over me. Only had $9 on me.
He had me follow him off of the highway, and into Morganton, NC. Several miles, and I honestly thought about making a run for it.
They put me in a cell, and then took my car apart. Good thing for me, they weren't very good at searching for stuff:cool:. After a few hours, they let me go. All it cost was my wrist watch, my spare tire ( brand new, never been on the ground ), and my bumper jack. They were very frustrated that I didn't have anything else they wanted.
A week later, my father and mother took a trip to NC to get that stuff back. I didn't know they were going, and later, my dad told me that they had a huge room packed full of all kinds of stuff, and were shocked that someone came back. They got all of it back, and my dad said nobody said shit to him.
To this day, I think of that when I go past the Morganton exit.

  13. Well yes, I have been arrested and was a guest of the grey bar motel.

A size 12 right foot was more to blame than the car.

I was busted for drag racing, and like any idiot teenager I was totally oblivious to at least looking around at my surroundings and thinking I shouldn't be racing here, nope me and another idiot just had to play red light to red light racing on main street.

The man in blue had called a wrecker to impounded my car and after frisking me to make sure I didn't have any weapons I was given temporary use of a shiny pair of bracelets made to be worn with ones hands in a awkward position behind ones back, then I was guided to the back seat of the waiting patrol car and chauffeured off to the police department, I was finger printed and they took my picture for their photo album.

I was given my one phone call, I called my dad, he showed up in the wee hours of the morning and bailed me out, the ride home was oddly quiet and my dad wasn't happy.

Dad dropped me off at the impound yard Monday after school and I paid the bill and got my car back.

I learned a valuable lesson that Saturday night back in the late 60's.

Don't race if you can't afford to pay the piper, after the paying the fine, court cost, impound fees, I was out almost 500 bucks, not to mention how much my insurance increased, it took me a while to repay my dad had he not helped I might have been a long time resident of the Grey Bar Motel. HRP

Why yes. Yes I have. Sadly when I was in my early 20’s, driving my ‘69 Torino 428.

I wasn’t sober when I wrecked it, but I was when I came to drag it out of the ditch in the morning. But Johnny law beat me there, and I had warrants...

I only spent a night in the holding cell at suburb local cop shop, went before the judge at 10:00 am. I was street racing a friend in his new safe area for street racing, he turned off, got away, I went straight, went off road across ditch into cornfield on 90 deg corner as I did not know road. I'll never forget as I'm sitting in my 64 Impala SS, heart pounding, the doors, hood and trunk had popped open, the cops arrive and over the loudspeaker states, Lock her up Buddy, You're Going to jail, And Now the rest of the story. All night they wanted the name of other driver, I didn't know, random race, wink/wink. I'm 20 years old, plenty of tickets, speeding, etc, basically drove like an ASS from the time I started driving till this adventure. My first wife shows up in court crying with our 2 year old and she's pregnant with our second child. The judge has my complete driving record, plenty to read, reads it off and reads the new charges, drag racing, eluding, reckless driving, driving after revocation. He pauses deal, takes me/wife/kid/arresting officer into his office for awhile. I'm respectful/ quiet/polite answer all his questions, he talks with my wife/2 year old, to me about my apprenticeship Tool & Die job, goals, dreams etc. I had just bought our first house. Sends us back out while he thinks about me for a time. After about a 1/2 hour or so I go before him again. You realize young man I can put you in Huber detention for up to 6 months, but I've decided to not punish your family, for you, I want your word this behavior stops now and I'm sending your driving records and this agreement to all the surrounding suburbs/communities, If you break our agreement you are going to jail, period. I shook his hand, I thanked him, had to pay a $150 fine, pay to get my car back, it was towed and go home. The next day I left work early to get car back, came home, made a sign for window, went cruising, sold car that evening and kept my word, no street racing for many years. For a while I drove little as possible, the insurance to get my license back was more than my house payment. I did drive for a few years very carefully without a license or insurance and lucked out without any problems, I have many stories about being Lucky and my Guardian Angel that watches over me. I have been blessed all my life.

1958 or there abouts,..... Wichita,............ airmen, ..........at a drive in............, 51 red convert ford custom,........top down,.........Michigan plates,......... (4) of us downing a long necks. Nice fall day, cops pull in. Pull us out of the car, vagrancy is the charge, airmen generally disliked in those days, car is towed. We,...... drug off to town jail, no cell time, not booked, provost martial on base called, he came hit the ceiling, can't be vagrant if in U.S. Air Force, pure police harassment, never arrested, just harassed. Car released no charge, brought to the station, we left.
Next week the cops had race riots to deal with, they needed something to entertain them.
Yes we showed military ID. Didn't stop them. We filed complaint at direction and with help from provost martial.
    Nothing ever came of it.

Multiple time, even seized my 69 Charger, said it was used in a robbery out of town, ran all the #’s, searched the car and got it back next day. Most of the other times were just simply doing monster burnouts, haha. Still do, just smarter now, we’ll some!

  20. Way back around '63, A buddy and I were making a daybreak O:clock, morning run from the Chicago suburbs to the Wisconsin state line to do some bass fishing. He was driving his late fifties Edsel and wanted to show off to me a little. We were on a state road, with 5 miles of cornfields on each side and 0 population, where he "floored it" for about a half-mile to 90 and a fraction. A 2-man squad came out of nowhere and pulled us over. Everything was cool with those 2 younger cops until a second black-n-white showed up with an older cop sporting a beer belly and a Boss Hogg attitude. He pulled his .45 to wave in our faces and told the other 2 to pat us down and search the car. He had a bogus story about an APB on a similar looking car. Well, they found the fishing equipment right away and that was enough to haul us into the police station which was at a wide spot in the road in another cornfield. We were subjected to fingerprinting and 20 minutes in a cell, then were cut lose and sent on our way without a ticket. I don't recall the old cop being at the station so the younger, cooler guys only halfway put any effort in the "scared straight" act. We knew and they knew it was a bullshit-show. We joked with the cops in a friendly way and didn't pull any attitude which helped in the peace and love resolution to the experience.

Another time, one divorce after high school, I had just finished a valve lash adjustment on my built Olds 350cid and was doing a quick RPM test run on a quiet road at the edge of town. I got pulled over by a town cop as I was headed back home. He happened to be an ex-classmate and someone I cruised with a couple of times back when we were younger. He asked me to pop the hood. After I give him a quick tour of the engine room, he closed the hood, suggested I chill for then and go further out of town next time. (Technically, he didn't witness my run; he was relayed a call-in complaint on the radio. So an unfriendly cop shouldn't have been able to cite me. But I'm careful not to play that card in a cop's face. I'd save it for court.)

Also was stopped one time by the local police, who we didn't get along with because we were from the wrong part of town, and they told me I was wanted for questioning in an armed robbery in a town I had never been in! Somehow they got a description of a plate number which was similar to mine and were just aching to bust my balls. Unfortunately my big ole 1958 Metro van could never be considered a good get away vehicle and when I laughed about it they said, "Well maybe you weren't involved but we think you loaned your plate to someone." All because I had it on the dash up inside the front window. I was out of state with the van on the date the robbery occurred visiting a teacher I used to work with so they had nothing. And just in case your wondering I wasn't guilty of anything!

Got clocked in the coupe doing 71 in a 45 speed zone near Hilbish FORD in Kannapolis NC. Had a perfect driving record at that time so the policeman wrote the ticket at 55 in a 45 zone so he let me off with a good talking to. I was 68 or 69 yo at that time. You know how hard it is to take a chewing out from a younger cop at that age!!!!????……...

  25. I wrote the story on the HAMB already, so I won't repeat it except to say that the cop asked me for my pilots license, and when I showed him, he had a difficult time keeping a straight face. He let me off with a warning.

I wonder how many guys, like me, look at this thread and consider posting. And then decide it might just be better to not go in to it.

About 3 months into my year's tour in Vietnam my mom sent me a panic stricken letter saying that I got another ticket in the next six months I was going to lose my license. Wrote back saying that I didn't see the problem. Never got a ticket in Nam although to this day I probably hold the speed record across the Quang Tri Bridge. They were getting ready to close the gate when I got to the bridge and closed it behind me and we didn't slow down until we got to the other side.
My 55 Buick was well known to the state Patrol in Central Wa and one time one of them shows up at work and asks where my car was and I said that my girlfriend had it and was going to the mall with it. He had stopped her because he had never seen anyone else drive the car and then came and checked on her story.
Closest I came to going to jail was headed back to my apartment two towns from where I worked and had a car chasing me that I thought was my former step brother and some of his buddies tying to race me and I laid in to it and when I crested a hill there was a big road block a half mile ahead, looked in the mirror and saw that the car behind me had his red/blue lights flashing so I stopped and let him write the ticket. Turns out some guy from the town had escaped from Walla Walla and stole a blue and white 55/56 Chevy that from a distance matched the blue and white on my 55 Buick.

Well, does sitting in holding cell for being out after curfew (10p) count?
While living in SoCal back in the mid sixties, three of us were pulled over questioned and taken in.
The back story.....my HS chum who was driving was looking for a fellow to drag race when out of nowhere came the cops. Apparently, they also have been looking for this fellow but not to drag race.
Anyways, they hauled the three of us off to the station. Mug shot, finger prints and holding cell. Calls to parents (at midnight). The ol man wasn't too happy coming down to get me.
    Hodlums! :)

It wasn't because of the car, but what was in the trunk......
Seems Cops don't like you having two six packs of beer with a couple of them missing when you're 17 and the legal drinking age is 19!
Only reason I got stopped was I took a shortcut that went by a church, County cops were doing a door check since there had been several churches broken into, who in their right mind breaks into a church? Anyways, I saw them, no problem, we cool, pull out in the main road, damn C4 transmission decides it's time to slip, didn't always slip, just at the worst times, and this was one of them. They follow a mile or so, pull me over because I can't get over 45 without the damn thing screaming like a jet airplane, must have smelled the beer on my breath, got pulled out and the whole search and seizure deal. Took me to the county pokey, let my buddy go, he drove my car and went and got a grown friend to get me out. Never did go to court, my grown friend was friends with the judge and got it covered. Got rid of that pos car not long after!
