1952-59 Ford Have you replaced your wiper motor?

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by k5mog, Mar 8, 2014.

  1. Single speed electric still has to be better than the vacuum wipers I would think.. Plus for the price I think this is a really good idea. Does it take up a lot of room under the dash?

I may be wrong but I thought the speeds were controlled by the switch, I think even the intermittent wipers are controlled the same way.

I did a little research and it looks like you can use a switch and intermittent box from a ''73-''79 Ford pickup. I bet there's other switches that will work.

The switch on the far right in the picture is a standard switch from an early Bronco.

    Where to look for parts
Any Ford truck from 73 to about '84 or '85 should be a suitable donor truck for the switch and governor.
The right switch is big and has a black ground wire, none of the others have this ground wire. The governor has a red plug and is found on late 70's through 1990's. The four wire motors with the correct plug will be found on 76 through 79 F150 and F250s. The washer plug is usually found in the trucks with the four wire motor and it will work with the governor plug. The newer switches have windshield washer function built in.

    Here is a link to a guy that put electric wipers in his '54 Ford using later model parts;

Looks like the wiper motor used in my link above is for a '66-'79 Ford pickup and full size Bronco.

I just watched a video on YouTube and this wiper motor turns in continuous circle, not back and forth so I don't see how this motor was used in a '54.

Rotating wipers motors will not work on a 54 car the location of the wiper arms is too close to the outside of the windshield. They have to park pointing toward each other. On the subject of 69-79 ford wiper motors, good luck finding any at a salvage yard. The ones I could find on ebay cost more then a new kit from newport. Good to know about the older switches that may help me in my setup.

Ralph, were you looking at the 69-79 wiper motor to use on your '54? From a car or truck?

Mark-T, I looked for a 59 motor from a car, per some earlier post here. What I found was completely unreasonable. I went to a rear wiper motor from a late model van after reading a post on the Old Willis forum ( pete's electric wiper ) that's how I wound up with my project. I'm fairly satisfied except for it being single speed. I've since discovered that an early mustang wiper motor is probably what I should have used. Going that route I would have saved about $75.00 over a newport unit, using a new or rebuilt motor. Not a big enough savings for me. Any way I'm through with this for now got to get some paint on things.

One of the crazy things I spent gobs of time on my '57 was a '97 Mustang wiper motor. One of the pics I posted shows a '97 Mustang steering column which I went to to get some of the controls off the dash, and wanted the column to be fully functional, including the multi-function swich(wipers, etc.). The guys at Ron Francis told me the only way this could be done was to use the '97 Mustang wiper motor and control module. As the guys above posted, this motor rotates the full 360, and the newer wipers both sweep in the same direction, not one colockwise, and one counterclockwise as my oem '57's were. My car had the pulley and cable system, which wasn't going to work with the roudy-round motor. I got a Mustang wiring manual and, after much back and forth searching different diagrams, made a small harness to plug into the control module and multi-function switch. I them modified the stock wiper pivots and made a complete hard arm system for the wipers that reverses the direction of the p***enger wiper so they now funtion as the oem, except I now have variable speed wipers! It was one of those challenging projects you do just to see if you can! The wiper motor is instaaled inside the cowl, accesible from under the dash..lots of fabricating work to get that done, not something to do on a driver.
See next post for a pic of the hard arm setup I made.

Thanks chopped top.... a couple added notes: The center swivel bar is not attached to the long rod going from the motor to the driver's side pivot...it's just laying on top of it in the photo. It's that center bar that changes the direction that the p***enger pivot rotates. I've checked it out with temp. power to the motor, and the swivel linkage I used is too sloppy...noisy at higher speeds. I'm going to replace them with oem type joints like are at the pivots.

Hi folks....I didn't want to create a new thread just to ask a very dumb and quick question, so I thought I'd ape someone else's!

I had my vacuum wiper motor refurbished about 4 years ago, but when I removed and subsequently re-installed the motor, I never noticed that the vacuum line from the fuel pump actually Ts off under the dash, with one line going to the wiper motor and one going off somewhere else. I checked my service manual quickly and couldn't find anything about it.

Can anyone tell me where that other line goes off to?

I turned the motor on for the first time in a little while a few weeks ago, and somehow it caused a leak to occur. I've confirmed that the short hose from the T to the wiper motor doesn't have any holes in it, and I've placed a worm gear clamp on that hose where it meets the wiper motor. I swear there's still a small hissing coming from somewhere up under the dash, though there's enough vacuum for the motor to work now at least, and the hiss is quite small (maybe that's typical and I just never noticed it??).

Other vacuum line goes to the heater hot water valve.

I replaced mine with a 2 speed wiper motor I bought for a 40 Ford but never used.

I just had to bake a bracket to bolt it in place. HRP

Not much to see but it's behind the original mount.

For what it's worth Ford put electric two speed wipers in their pickups in 53, (if you are staying 6 Volt) I ******ed one from the U-pick but haven't done anything with it.
