~tech article could be old, new who knows

Due to this diner approach of Hot Rod more often then not I've skimmed a copy of it at the store but then bought other more focused magazines to bring home. I saw that RoadKill video, it was meh there really wasn't that much content when you take a step back and think about it.

 

It's not always about going fast, its nice to look good while you do it. I'd rather have something a little slower that looks good rather than something super fast but embarrassing to be seen in. A big block powered '65 Impala will always be 1000 X's cooler than a 2012 Subaru with a turbo, even if it does get its doors blown off in a race.

 

I have boxes of Hot Rod Magazines from 1960 to 1979, those are the ones I keep and still enjoy thumbing through. I still get Hot Rod, read it and give them away to friends. I think people are more narrow minded now days. They don't want to read anything that does not fall into there little world, that's fine but Hot Rod turned me on to things I would have not normally discovered, stock car racing, flat head V8s, sprint cars, innovators of the day etc. They've been around for 65 years and at about a buck an issue, how can you bitch?

 

EXACTLY. You can make a old car fast....but you'll be hard pressed to make a 2012 Subarooo "cool"

I just read the revised HotRod magazine and I must say it is a lot better than it has been for a long time. I hated their small block Chevy days when it seemed like everything revolved around SBC's and Camaro's.

Here is the real problem ... Every print magazine is struggling to stay alive. I commend them for taking some positive steps to keep HotRod going. It would be really sad if HotRod magazine went away even if its not my "ideal" magazine. It is deep rooted in the HotRod tradition even if it is not "traditional".

 

Follow the money trail. We know (the face's) Furbie, writers, ect. Who is controlling the money/selling the ad space. The money men dictates the product's end result. Ad space/products. Who ARE the faces that OWN and control Hot Rod magazine? Why has it been so lampooned for so long without being purchased by a real team of like minded gear head's.

But that's not true for an entire generation or two, who has grown up with Sube's and the like and have absolutely NO Emotional connection at all to a '65 anything. And since the magazine is HOT ROD, not Old Hot Rod Digest, they need to cater to the people who are going to buy the magazine in the biggest quantity. And even though I am in the over 55 crowd, and maybe because I grew up racing Rally cars, I think a properly done WRX can be totally Bad Ass and Cool personally.
Not saying you are wrong with your view by any means, just that they are putting out a magazine for Hot Rodders that appreciate ALL cars

Simple - Because it makes a lot of money for the company that owns it, Source Interlink, and they have no intention of selling it.

Criteria, not definition. Big difference. It is only a small part of the definition.

I had a quick flick through at the store today. I didn't notice too much difference. For me its too fragmented. Like Cycle World. Bits here. Bits there. In the 50s the mag opened with the tech section/new cars and was followed by the section featuring cars. The last section was for anything else. I guess I like things orderly. I did notice that the ECTA Ohio mile got about twice as much ink a Bonneville SpeedWeek.

 

They have a lot more pages to fill with content now, so my guess is they'll have much bigger speed week coverage too.

 

By your criteria, not a hot rod.

I wouldn't bet on that. I don't Bonneville or going fast is very high on their list of priorities.

 

A ratrod and a Lambo? Thats like comparing apples and squash!
Lamborghinis are spectacular automobiles but I think that they are more closely related to aerospace than to hotrods and certainly not something that I can build on a blue collar budget in my garage. Who cares if gold digger's like the way Lambos look going down the street? Are they really curious about the technology or are they simply looking for a sugar daddy, no matter what kind of dweeb he may be? I bet this is a far cry from what Robert Peterson had in mind in 1948. No thanks. ...Robber

Zman, I don't know where you got the idea that I'm somehow trying to have a prick fight with you, but I'm not playing. I expressed an opinion, and while it may differ from your high and almighty opinion, it is still MY OPINION and I am entitled to it. You build them your way, I'll build them mine.

 

A while back they put a vette motor in a little Pontiac solstace and made this wild tire burning little roadster. I felt like that was right on track for that magazine. Ryan's right they're spread too thin..

 

Haven't read it since Dean Lowe's roadster pickup was on the cover, don't plan to start now...

 

I picked up a few issues of Hot Rod just the other day.

They're dated mostly from '56 and '57.

 

Well, this was a good read. I can't wait to read it again in next months Hot Rod magazine bash. Always a good read.

Yes I did. It was wonderful. They really like me. You should see all the stuff in there that they want me to buy. They had cams and manifolds and crate motors and headers and Viagra, lots and lots of Viagra!

 

Fuck I liked, but I like me some "thick" gals too, so maybe Im not the one to ask .......
