I have a 48 Mercury that I’ve been building for a few years and I searched the frame and body for a vin and I couldn’t find anything. I tried doing a home built ***le for the car but Va dmv denied it. I’m kinda stuck at this point any info would be helpful. Thanks
I had to get a new ***le for my '28 Model A. I had to (1) fill out a DMV form, (2) provide notarized receipts for the car purchase, engine, trans, etc. As applicable, (3) take pictures of the complete car, and (4) pay sales tax. DMV sent a guy to my garage and he riveted a tag with a new Vin to the cowl's A post. A new ***le arrived in the mail a few days later. It's all on the VA DMV website. Hope this helps.
The number was stamped on the frame ,drivers side up near the front crossmember. The earlier Fords like 32 - 39 or so were stamped on the frame near the steering box. Look between there and to front crossmember.
this from another site ,, Find the Vin , In Va will make it alot easier ,pay the $50 fee / search for abandoned vehicle / lost ***le ... Usually within 30-60 days ... From other site """"" V V V V """ The VIN number is stamped into the top of the driver's side frame rail at the front crossmember. You should be able to open the hood and look down at the rail just to the rear of the radiator and see it IF the rail is clean. The number will have a five-pointed star, a 2 number, one letter prefix, a dash, then the numerical sequence number, then a five-pointed star. This same number is located on the transmission bellhousing IF the transmission is original to the car. If the body is off the frame, the number should be on the frame at the rear of the front door and at the rear crossmember. These locations will not have the stars at front and back.
...Just a quick word of advice, don't ever spend too much time or money on a car until you acquire a good, clean ***le. Take heed of the advice given above by @Just Gary and good luck. Hope it all works out for you.
Corection: three forms; vsa 12, vsa 17A, and vsa 22, and a "Statement of How the Vehicle was Constructed". If you can find a legible VIN, you won't need vsa 22 (Vin application). I had hard copies of all the dmv website instructions and followed them precisely. That saved a world of h***le. Don't get discouraged.
