It's funny how somethings are under your nose the whole time. I've been looking for a good running or close to running nailhead since I started my project A-bone in Oct. Nothing I've found (exept the froze 401 I got from my scrapyard buddy for nothing) has been worth the money. So I've mocked up a SBC in my chassis, because I have a few and taxes are due and this being my first build I decide to keep it as simple as possible. Well anyway one of my buddies is the manager at the Car Quest in town and we were talking about my car and that I was going to put a nailhead in it. He says who makes a nailhead and I say Buick. He says I got an old Buick engine in back that someone left here , sure as***** it was a 66 401 nailhead. Apparently some guy brought it in with a rebuild kit(w/pistons) in the late 80's and had the shortblock done, .030 over, turned crank, manual flywheel, fresh bottom end!!! I ask him what he wants for it and after some searching for paperwork we find out that Car quest has a grand worth of labor in it, Well he and the machineist talk it over for a little bit and decide in order to recoupe some of their lose that they would have to get $400 for it and I say I'LL TAKE IT!!! Now I'll have to take the heads off the scrapyard 401 and hopefully they will be able to freshen them. I'm pumped, I know it's not a 32 3 window in a barn but it's the closest I've came so far!...Mike
Wow!-what a stroke of luck.........guess it pays to be friendly with the "civilians" about our hot rod stuff!
