I'm gunna build me some of them cone style headers for the lil' modified,

I bought a couple 1-1/2" and one 1-3/4" "U" bends for the primarys and a 6' stick of 2-1/2" pipe all 14 gauge

today I cut the straight pipe into two 32" lengths that will become the cones.

I want a longer cone and smaller big end then I could find comercially
so I'm making my own, plus I just want to see if I can [IMG]

    here's the first cone;

    first the straight pipes

and ripped it lengthwise with the plasma cutter taking a long pie-cut out of it

the tube measures 1-3/4" at the small end and 2-1/2" at the big end and is 32" long..

or did I already say that? [IMG]

That's pretty cool the way you did that. Any problems making it round once you closed the gap in the vice?

Why such a small diameter cone?

that's what the block of wood is for,
I gently bumped it with a BFH to true it up after it was welded.

I don't want the big megaphone look, the motor is small and the exhaust will be 2"

or, uh, cuz i wanna? [IMG]

maybe with a lighter gauge pipe but not with the 14 gauge I'm using,

at least not with the regular radiator hose clamps..

I have seen pictures, here I think, of the hose clamp method.

    Nice work !

I had a go at that a little while back. One worked out nice, but the other ended up with a big banana-bend in it [IMG]

Anyways, I found that a good way to get them nice and round along the weld was to put a piece of steel pipe in the vice at one end, slide the meg. on and then support the other end of the tube. Then when you hammer along the weld, the tube works like a dolly.

And if you don't have a plasma cutter, you can cut the tube with a jigsaw.

Great stuff as usual, I really like the small diameter cones.
I can't wait to see what you have next week.

  21. Great post, Paul!

I think your whole build up series should be in the Tech-o-Matic!

    Keep it coming,
    Sam.

    just an update,

made the second cone and after a little knocking with the hammer I sanded them with 36 on down to 120 grit sanding discs on the little grinder, then hit them with the DA with 120 to smooth them up..

They do both have about a 3/16" bow in them from welding but decided to leave it in them, it kinda gives them a little swoop that takes some of the edge off. [IMG]

    like Novocain for the soul.

60's those are rad. We weren't nearly as creative and used the speedway kit. One thought as you mock up the positioning and angle of them cones as they go back. We found that where we tacked isn't were they stayed. They tended to***** in toward the car quite a bit and consequently I've had to go back and heat up and bend them back out resulting in a nice little wrinkle. I don't know if you preheat them on the outer edge when you mock them up or just provide a little extra distance. I'm not sure if the*****-in came during construction, welding the extensions from each exhaust port, or after installation.

  25. Very nice work Paul. Thanks, you just saved me the price of a kit for my 33. Looks like I owe you a cold one next time I make it over your way!
