Before I got my 40 home I started colecting parts for it. One of the first things I got was a set of fenderwell headers for it. Now That I got it home the inner fenderwells are really nice and I cant bring myself to cut them up. Im running a saginaw steering box so clearance is an issue. Will a set of block huggers clear? I was looking at full length chassis headers but they say will not clear the Saginaw box. Any help would be appreciated. Im not against running manifolds either. I just thought there was a clearance problem with running Ram Horns.

    Hey greeze,
    Here are a few options,

I'm usuing a 1956 chevy manifold. Dumps at the front of the block and
clears the box with no problem.
But this manifold has restricked flow.

Chassis engr. sells a header that will clear the saginaw box.

A rams horn manifold from a 69 chevy truck is angled toward the rear instead
of straight down which should also clear the steering box.
Or use the right manifold on the left bank. that will exit the
pipe towards the front of the block.

I was looking at the C/E site and the header they show is just a Sanderson block hugger, unless I missed something. If thats the case the fenderwells are going back and im getting some huggers.

  4. Greez, the Mexican might have a spare set of inners that you could cut up. I will ask him this week. That car begs for those fenderwell headers!

  5. there is no problem using straight down center dump rams horns , if done this many times on `35-`40 fords.....weadeter street rods makes head pipes that clear any steering box and end about under the seat..about $75...then ,it's simple to finish the rest of the exhaust

Greezy, take a look at Patriot exhaust products. They have many different styles based on application and they are manufactured to clear many different stearing configurations. I got a set of full lengths for my 46 and they look to be decent. I was in your predicament as I did not want to run fenderwell headers if I could avoid it. They had what I wanted. www.petronix.com is their web address. If you want to go headers instead of rams horns or the <ugh> street rod header type they may be able to help you.

yeah "linK" is easily confused.. he's been looking at a method of roping himself in...

when I was doing my 40..
I looked at buying that silly power steering bracket that chassis engineering sells and honestly I hate it.. I cant see how ANY manifold will clear that crazy thing.. its freaking huge.. SO eventually I bit the bullet and went with a mustang front suspension (also from CE)

for what its worth I use the rams horns that are angled back..
manifold from a 69 chevy truck is angled toward the rear instead
of straight down which should also clear the steering box.
Or use the right manifold on the left bank. that will exit the
pipe towards the front of the block.

off of the manifolds I use 2 - 90 degree bends (one kicks out one kicks toward the back of the car.. these two bens and a piece of tube about 2 foot long get the exhaust out under the running boards.

then the exhaust gases dump into a glasspack and then kick out with a 45 degree bend just ahead of the rear wheel..

I did the entire exhaust myself. and prolly have less than 50 bucks in it with mufflers..

    (just a thought)

A straight down rams horm may work in your '36, but they won't clear
a stock 40 box or a saginaw box.
Maybe you have been working on different '40s then we have?

Hey greeze.. I checked the C.E. catalog today and the headers
that will clear the sag box is made by Sanderson. And since your're
using the Hurst front saddle mount, you will have plenty of
    room.
    So there ya go.

  12. yes , they will clear stock ford steering box and saginaw box IF you use the head pipes i mentioned

here is a picture SBC/40 ford frame/ ram horns and a vega steering box and weedeter's head pipe

in the last year i have used this head pipe on two `40's with stock steering boxes

i don't think i have been working on "different" `40's

I just looked at the Weedeater website and the downpipes they advertise for 75$ specifically say "not for Sanderson headers".
I want to run the Chassis Eng. steering box plate for the Saginaw box too.

Also Chassis Eng. sells two Saginaw box mounts, one which bolts to the existing 35-40 Ford mount as an adaptor and one that replaces the original mount as a bolt in unit. But they say in the catalog that the replacing mount is for their small block Ford motor mount kit ONLY, has anyone used the small Ford mount?
