I have a 64 Impala, I just placed a 454 in and the headers it came with drop too low!!! I need to know if anyone could recomend some headers that wont drop below the frame (I'm running airbags currently) cause when the air is out of the bags the car rests on the exaust manifolds!!! Any help or insight would be awesome. Thanks guys
Not exactly the answer ... BUT Chevrolet had different motor mount stands in the Camaros ... a BBC will set down on the SBC motor stands ... but it sits too low. MAYBE you used SBC motor stands and a set of BBC motor stands MIGHT be the cure. .
Deuce, Thx for the assistance! I didn't know that and I used the stock motor stands (came with a 283) I'm going to check into the BBC motor stands. Thx again
I used Hedman shorty headers in a '65 Biscayne with a 454. However, I had to mock the headers onto a head amd had the muffler shop heat and bend them to fit.
The SBC/409 engine stands (the part that bolts to the frame) are what you need. There are no BBC stands for the X-Frame cars. The stands from the 6-cylinder cars are taller and will position the engine too far rearward (IIRC, might be forward, either way they don't work). Sanderson BB1 shorty headers will fit perfectly for your application. Tuck the S-shaped pipes that snake around the control arm up close to the frame.
Gassersgarage, Thank you. Chickenridgerods, Thank you, I will check up on that combo!!! Sounds like this might work the best for me
ok, so I checked and I don't think I'm going to have the clearance (from hood to air filter cover) to use the 409 motor mounts... any other suggestions???
The headers you need on a X frame car (58-64) exit to the side/ slightly rearward behind the front wheels and then the exhaust makes a 90 degree turn just after the collector to follow the frame. If your headers drop below the frame and go rearward then you have the wrong headers and will just about drag on the ground at stock ride hight. I don't have any experiance with big blocks but do have lots of practice with small blocks in '58, '63 & '64 chevy full-size cars but they all have to go the same way to fit. Good luck!
You'll need to use a shorter intake and/or air cleaner. Otherwise, you'll need to fabricate your own stands and transmission crossmember that lower the engine.
Sanderson has a nice set of full length that are intended for a BBC in a tri-5 chevy. I used them in my 1948 GMC. That are snug to the block and do not hang lower than the oil pan. I will see if I can find the link.
