Okay, this might seem like a stupid question but once you get them mounted how do you adjust the headlight? Do you have to line them up when you french them in? Thanks for the help, later shawn

This sums me up in a nut shell for one reason, I don't have the extra cash or resources ie: yards filled with old stuff, to be makin alot of mistakes trying to learn how to do something. This is what holds me back alot because it needs to be done right the first time or I'm screwed. I'm building this car on a $20 a week budget + what other freebies and stuff I sell to put toward the car. later shawn

I agree hagen kits are just UGLY.. on JUST about everything..

isn't the point of Frenching to minimize the affect of the headlight being the focal point of the front end?

hagen lights MAKE the headlights standout.. on most customs the opposite should be the goal.

on the flip side.. sometimes.. headlights should stand out.

like when the peak on olds fenders are modified to match 53 Chevy headlight rings.

    forgive the temporary painted bumper..
    chrome will be along sometime..

***Excuse my ignorance here, but on this car the headlights are not "Frenched", IMO. According to Bill Hines, the term "Frenched" came from the look of men's cuffed shirts back in the day, that had cuffs on them that were rounded out and starched. "French Cuffed Shirts". They had a "tunneled" look around the wrists. As such, "Frenched" headlights to me, display a bit of a tunnel effect in terms of how far back the headlights sit. They are set back a bit, to different degrees depending on the taste of the builder. The headlights in effect are set back in their openings from 1-3" or so. The car in the pic above would therefore have "flushed" lights, where the headlights were reworked to sit flush in the fender opening. I would not look at this car and think it had "Frenched" lights, although I would stand back and admire it's beauty. The other pics I've included from this thread are what I believe are what one could consider an example of "Frenched".***[/QUOTE]

Bill Hines is wrong. A nice guy, but mistaken. The term "Frenched" dates back to the time BEFORE extended 1952-1954 headlight rims existed. They were all flush-frenched, just like on that green Merc. All of my early 1950s kustom magazines refer to the 1952-54 Ford/Mercury rim frenchings jobs as "semi-tunneled" or "frenched and tunneled." The term "frenching" probably comes from something to do with smoothing them, possibly because a French car had the headlights mounted from behind. (Delahaye or something?)

  11. That car is from Springfield, IL-looks like the pic was taken at the Grandstand of the IL State Fairgrounds

Do you know how to read?

If you answered yes, re read the above quote.

Standing back and admiring a cars beauty is not considered bashing. Mercman was merely commenting on the definition of a term. Relax.

That picture was taken this weekend at the Des Moines event, I got it from one of the Des Moines Posts.

He is from Springfield? That would explain why he trailered it to Bloomington Il last year. 75 miles would be a long way to drive it.

    B:rolleyes:B

Thanks for the clarification...I have been mislead! I can see your point and it makes more sense given the different "variations" I've seen...

I was doing nothing of the sort! I think the car I used in my question looks gorgeous...but I'm not so sure he was yelling at me...I think he was aiming for the original poster of this thread.

The only thing that really matters is if the dude that owns the car likes it.

    Yup, they do look ugly.
You get a better transitition with tack welding the bezel to the fender and doing the body work yourself.

I hate em too.... however I am stuck with them on a car I just bought that is already painted (really nice too). Has anyone tried to alter the Hagen housings by using the night prowler rings? Does this work by chance... this is a last ditch effort on my part... Hey we could call it savin' the hagen?
