I don't know how much room you have but , early 70s datsun pu . Takes
about three screws to take it out with controls and with unneeded
stuff removed is about 10" square and really puts out heat, would
run you out of 40 tudor if left on.

Some studebakers had a small little defroster motor heater combo in conjuction with the car heater, I'm guessing late forty's to at least mid fifty's. My friend runs one in his rod and says it's really good cause it is so small it fits up behind the dash yet big enough to at least take the chill off. I just got one off ebay and the whole unit motor and all weigh under 5#.

Weather in Washington State dictates at least defrosters, so when I spotted a vintage restored BF Goodrich heater/defroster on Ebay I jumped on it, installed it in my 37 Ford Coupe. I only plumbed my side for the defrost, cause when I take my missus to the Triple XXX Drive-in in December and I mash on the commencer, she closes here eyes anyway.

  4. the first part i took out of my 37 was the heater. Real Hot Rods don't need heaters or air conditioners ! by the way this thread was started back in 2007 it's getting kinda old.

  7. The old art deco heaters from the 40's are a nice addition to any Hot Rod. They bring a lot of character/style, and of course practicality to them. "Real Hot Rods don't need heaters" may be true, if you live in So Cal, or Florida, or you don't drive it in the non-summer months. A Hot Rod without a heater..is a Hot Rod I don't need.

It may have started in 2007, but it's one that is popular and imho, a great one. Lots of great ideas. Keep it coming.

When I was young about 40 or so years ago, I wore a parka ,gloves and insulated hunting boots to drive in the winter. Now I plan to put in an under seat heater that will do the job unnoticed. This unit is similar to the one discussed by the Suburban driver in an earlier post.

Heaters are not traditional? Seems they have been around a long time. I have one in my 30, it is a Vintage Air setup so by all means it in itself isn't traditional but to not have heat is stupid of you feel you need it. I would have loved to keep the stock heater out of a 40 chev special deluxe I sold earlier this year. It was mint mint shape. The car had 66K. I also have two of the old Tropicair heaters, they too will come to use. Great thread, Joe

    Landlubber :)

If you cruise the ocean beach at night and the fog rolls in, you also need a defroster AND a wiper ;)

If youv'e never cruised the beach at night, I feel bad for you:D

Don't know if this ones been posted yet. I was looking at a 48 ford pickup with no heater, here in PA its nice to have one on spring mornings and fall evenings just for the defrost factor. I found this one from Mojave. Its not traditional but its compact 10 1/4" wide 9" deep and 5" high.

We went to Cruise to the Woods in Ft Dodge IA Sunday,34 degrees in the morning. That helped me make my mind up,putting a heater in the 31.

  18. I'm kinda laughing at the guys who are calling US pussies for wanting heaters in our rides. They're probably the same guys who won't take their car out of the enclosed trailer unless it is over 70* and there had better not be a cloud in the sky... :)

I drive the hell out of all of my old cars, and you had better have a heater and especially some decent defrosters to drive around here when it is raining and cold outside or else you're going to wind up in a ditch. One of the most fun events that I participate in every year is the one where we take a nice drive through the country looking at the leaves changing the first weekend in November. This is one of the FEW car-related events that some of the wives will participate in, and you had better have a heater or else she isn't going next year, no way, no how. Gotta keep the peace or you ain't getting a piece, as my friend would say!

On the subject - Anyone using a (gasp!) foreign car heater / AC box? I am doing the Dodge Dakota frame / running gear / floor pan & firewall swap under a 49 Dodge pickup body, but the Dakota heater / AC box is huge and it hangs far too low under the 49's dash. I figured that an import car would have a much more compact unit that would fit up under the dash... I DON'T have the cash for a Vintage Air or similar unit, even though I'd LOVE to have one. My wife lost her job 2 years ago AND is back in school, so money is TIGHT. Any recommendations on an import / domestic small car box that would work? THANKS!

  19. Like this one. I usually keep at least one lieing around myself. You can usually find them at swap meats cheap as no one knows what they are.

They are perfect for a little coupe or smaller pickup. You get radiant heat from the coil and you have a defroster.

Oh the camera is a 35MM Cannon for size reference.

Well then I probably already posted on this thread.

I thought I was posting on this thread which is new today.

It is on my list of things to do, I do have A/C for medical reasons. Ironocally it was on my delete items for hotrods from years gone by.

I want a nice bulk head for the hoses to go through the firewall.

  21. Regardless of when this thread was started,,every time the weather gets cold it comes back just as surely as your past transgressions.

I've drive my topless hiboy roadster when it was 18 degrees and wearing everything I owned and I was still cold,,,that was a good 10 years ago!

I'm older and wiser,,but for some reason or another I have still neglected to install a heater in the sedan,,,but with age comes wisdom they say!

I am going to add a heater to the sedan,,,soon!:D HRP

  22. In the last 40+ years I have certainly driven more cars without heat than with heat and I have lived and driven everyday in places where you have to lean out the window and scrape if it is one of those type of days. I have never been proud of it it is not a badge of honor by any means in fact it is a little embarrasing , it is just a fact of life.

i prefer to be warm but if I am not I am still going to get where I need to be motor cycle car or whatever it takes.

There is not a thing in the world wrong with wanting to be comfortable I don't care what any one says.

Whenever I need heat in my sedan all I just have to remove the boot from my emergency brake lever. I get heat from the exhaust which is right underneath. At least that keeps my passenger warm. :D
