Trying to find rear axle brake parts for a 32 oldsmobile boat tail speedster I'm building. The bolt pattern is 5 on 5 1/2 like some of the older ford's were. It had mechanical brakes when I got it and converting it over to hydraulic drum. Any help would be appreciated. Thanis!

  2. Maybe adapt 40 Ford parts to it?????

Ford half ton pickups used the 5.5" bolt pattern for decades. Jeeps too....

  5. Actually if it were mine I would keep my brake stuff and just try and adapt hydraulics to the original backing plates. unless something else just happened to be easier. ;)

Pictures of what's there now might help us figure out what would be a good way to do it.

  7. Is it a 12" brake setup?----or?

Where is the pictures, both of the car, brakes, rear end and what does it have to brake?
How much engine in front? Are you planning on upgrading the rear brakes, because you got bigger front brakes? Or you are looking for parts for a stock setup?

Thanks for all the info guys. Searched all day and found nothing on it, but found out that a 60 ford pickup rear axle has the same bolt pattern. I think it will be the way to go. Easier to get parts for. Here's some pictures of the build. It has a straight 8 flathead. We put a ford front setup on it to convert it to the hydraulic front brake drums since drum brakes are required on it to run on "The Great American Race" for that era.

    Hey

Looking good. There is a thread on here about: what did I buy? Very nice Chevy boattail on a 1929 frame.

I would swap the full rear end, to something where you can get the same bolt pattern as the front end. I would consider adapting some other front brakes too.

Mostly because it's something else to do a hard brake down in rush hour on the freeway today, as opposed to brakeing it down on the salt flats or dry lake of the 30s and 40s.

And an added bonus you get to go to your local O'Riley, NAPA or the like and just order of the shelf brake parts. Most shops carry mid-50s and forward pick up parts, but very few carrys mid-30s olds parts. [emoji33]

I like the mill and how the body is comming. And parallel rear springs means that there is a HAMB friendly rear end for sale near you, and the HAMB can guide you to it [emoji6]
What are you running for wheels? What are you running for transmission?
If you got your wheels sorted and got a open rear end, you could post wheels, bolt pattern, track width, spring pad width and transmission and we might be able to give better advice.

I would swap the rear as Volvobrynk stated. Easier then fighting with adapting the cloth u-joint a 32 Olds has.

If you still want some help putting brakes on the Olds rear, maybe you could post some pictures of the Olds rear, specifically the area where the brakes attach.
