I kept stumbling onto this sight while trying to gain info. After being sent here over and over I took some time to read and look deeper and decided to quit BS'in arouynd and hook up. So here I am. I am in the beginning phase of a resto and mild custom on a '56 Plymouth. I want to stay true and keep the P28 and top it off with a set of dual strombergs. Messin with the flat heads is a new thing for me. I have always wrenched on over-head valve engines, but after driving it 65 miles from where I bought it to the garage she is in now I fell in love witgh the torque little 6. Looking for info, advice from a few wrenches who have been messin with them longer than me. Not much to tell. I am new here so.... HI

Thanks. I am not lucky enough to have the big motor. I the little 230 inline 6. The torque curve on it is impressive and I hope with a set of headers, dual strombergs, and a hotter ignition I can wake it up. Thought about pulling it, but after some research and the drive from Mansfield Ohio to Fremont Ohio -60 miles or so I decided to keep the little 6 and see if some respectable power could be massaged out of her...

First check out the P15-D24 site http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/index.php?referrerid=1152 there is a ton of info there on the flathead Mopars.

For speed parts check out Edgy Speed Shop http://www.edgyspeedshop.com/ Earl produces finned aluminum heads, dual carb intakes and regrinds cams.

Langdon's Stovebolts http://stoveboltengineco.com/ has Offenhauser dual carb intakes, HEI distributors, headers in both a tube version and a Fenton cast iron repop.

You can also check with Moose here on the HAMB http://www.manifoldsbymoose.com/home/plymouth-dodge-intakes-and-headers he builds custom tube intakes and headers and comes up with some wild looking set-ups.

For stock rebuild / maintenance type parts NAPA, Rock Auto http://www.rockauto.com/, Mitchell Motors http://www.mmpar.com/StoreVBVS2011/default.aspx, Andy Bernbaum http://www.manifoldsbymoose.com/home/plymouth-dodge-intakes-and-headers will have what you need.

Not sure what you have for a transmission but if it is the manual I would suggest searching out an overdrive if you don't already have one. You can go with the Borg Warner R10 or go with a T5 from an S10. Paul Curtis has an adapter plate for the T5 http://home.comcast.net/~tcbass/t5.html

I have a 57 model 230 in my 48 Plymouth coupe with a 53 model R10 overdrive. Great combination that will cruise at 70 all day and is easy to work with.

    Good luck with your build.

hkestes, Thanks for all the info. I will check into those. I have thought about the edgy head, have ytou used one of their cam's and how intricate are the flatty's to rebuild? I am going back and fourth on a full rebuild. The motor only has 54,XXX on its clock.

The rebuild is really pretty straight forward. One thing to make sure of for a rebuild is to pull the water distribution tube before the block is tanked. The flathead has a tendency to accumulate gunk in the water passages along the bottom on the drivers side and even tanking the block may not remove everything. Be sure to get in there with some brushes or stiff wire to break stuff loose and flush well with a hose until it runs clean.

One other thing you can do to bump performance a bit is to shave the head. You should have your machinist check the surface of the block to make sure it is flat and mill if it needed. Then use some clay on the head of the valve to measure the clearance to the head and cut the head accordingly. If the head / deck have never been cut, you can remove a combined 0.090 with no problems and bump the compression ratio from the stock 7.4:1 to something just over 8.0:1.

I did not do it but others on the P15-D24 forum have used small block Chevy valves in their builds. Not exactly sure what the part numbers were but there was only minor mods required to get the valves to work in the flathead.

I am still running the stock cam in my 230, but Earl Edgerton who owns Edgy Speed Shop is very knowledgeable on the Mopar flathead and runs an early 30's Chrysler Coupe with flathead at Bonneville. He has developed an overhead valve conversion for the flathead 6 (used on the push truck in the second link below) and helped one of his buddies Pete "Pedro" Hendrickson develop the flathead 4 in his Bonneville record holding Dodge Roadster.

I have had a few conversations with Earl when building my engine and he was very helpful and provided a lot of good info.

I went to the links you gave me on your other post. I sent out an email to Edy on a head and cam. I would prefur to reuse mine, but I don't know. I never planned to rebuild it but after pulling the thermostat and finding lots of muck and popping one of the soft plugs on the side of the block and found sludge. So now I am considering a full on rebuild... ERG!

I will probably end up with an Offy intake though... Found a Mallory distributor as well but am considering keeping the points and running a Jaccobs ignition.

ok well 1st piece of advice, strombergs are not for plymouths. Carter ball and ball. More CFM, better carbs. Leave the strombergs for the flathead ford folks.

Best advice I can give you. Call the master.. GeorgeAsche - 814 354 2621

want some evidence .. lol enjoy. here is what is likely the worlds fastest flathead in the works .

I was under the impression that Strombergs were the way to go. I have a couple mismatched carter 1 bbl's that will fit the intake... The origonal carter and a model a few years newer. Also tryin to keep a decent budget going.

I might. So far things seem to be going ok-I probably spoke too soon, but oh well. I got lucky and she only has 54,XXX on the clock. I amsure I will be hitting you up for parts. I just found out today that the stromberg's I got for it won't feed it enough...
