I just purchased a '64 buick special sedan with a wildcat 310, Previous owner probably messed up 1st and Rev. speed shifting the 3 speed columb shift , sounds terrible in 1st or reverse. I would like to update a bit and put a floor shift four or five speed trans in it, I am looking to do this as economically as possible so i am thinking trans from a wrecked S 10 ? It will need cable speedo, any suggestion on what i need to purchase to make this happen ? something easy to find, What will fit the back of the buick bell housing, what trans to use, and what adapter plate? Thanks.
Hi & welcome. I cannot help with what will fit but something quick to check on the first & rev not shifting correct. Under the hood look at the 2 shift arms that move up & down when you shift. Most cars have a plastic bushing in those 2 arms where the actual shift rods go thru them. If the bushings are worn or missing it won't shift worth a dang. Jimmie
Done this trans swap years ago on my 65 Skylark with the same 3 on the tree set up you have. A late 60's muncie 4 speed goes right in, same drive shaft, same 10 spline stock clutch disc, you will need to get a longer speedo cable. Easy peesee. Cut a hole for the shifter and bang some gears. If your car is like mine with those tall rear gears and a wide ratio 4 speed it makes for big top end speeds. Other GM 4 speeds may work also but I am not sure so check around.
Thanks , Now to see if any one has a muncie or saginaw 4 speed witha floor shifter to bolt into my 64 buick special sedan, 310 wildcat engine for sale, Anyone ? Steve.
