I am new since yesterday 4/23. I also have a login problem and have sent a request. I have a question about 1950 Chevy linkage. If I am not in the correct area, please direct me to the correct area. I have a 1950 Chevy Fleetline with 3 on the tree and I have difficulty getting into First and Reverse gears while driving in traffic. If I have time while I'm stopped at a red light I can eventually get it into gear. I'm having trouble finding First Gear and Reverse. I have been a garage monkey for over 40 years and I'm stumped as to why this is happening. I tried Youtube but no luck. Hopefully, someone will know what my problem is and can help. Much appreciated.
Hi & welcome. Some stuff for you to check f your problem is something like trying to put it in gear is like hitting a wall & just cannot get there? Under the hood look at the 2 shift arms coming off the steering column. In neutral they should side by side and not on two different angles up & down. If they are off you man need to adjust one of the arms on the side of the transmission to get upper arms equal. Once that is ok look where the linkage rods from the transmission go thru the two upper arms and have a washer & cotter pin holding them. There should be a plastic bushing in the holes in the arms and if missing there is just too much slop to work correctly. If not avalible locally both www.chevsofthe49s.com or www.thefillingstation.com stock them. One time when I had to have a set of these like right now I took two either 1/4" or 5/16" hex nuts (forget which) and slightly drilled out the threads and rounded the outside on my grinder and they worked like a charm. For this brass nuts would work best. One or both of the above things likely will fix your problem. Jimmie
