My 1959 Ranchero starter went out today at my office. I need to get the car home. I am running a 1961 390 V8. The starter looks like the one in the first picture.

Does anyone know if I can use any ole Ford 390 starter like the one in picture 2? Like they sell at autozone....

    Thanks!

    Mike

Although I wish I had a manual transmission, I am running the original automatic.

I pulled the starter in the parking lot and found that the bendix (I think that is the name?) was separated making the gear spin freely. I re-mated the gear, put the starter back in and it started up perfectly. I drove home and tucked it in the garage. I will just order a new rebuilt starter and be done with it. Thanks for the responses guys. :)

You can just replace the Bendix if you like. That autotrans should have a rear pump and be able to be bump started also. Good luck, Mike.
