Help I am tired of the Chineese chrome shit you get for air cleaners. I need inspiration for something different. Show me the way!!
Just to nag: no filter as small as the ones shown has enough area not to restrict the carb. The mesh/screen ones filter money from your wallet.
Hello..I bought the hex tub from a supply company and drilled and fit..easy and inexpensive.. Duane..
Yeah, they look super nice! Vintage Speed sells them and I think EGGE sells them also. Maybe with a little luck there is a HAMB Alliance Vendor selling them, but I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure they're based on a standard K&N filter also.
You are welcome sir! If you get them, let us know. I would really like to know how they are. The only reason I changed my mind on getting them is because I have 6 carbs to outfit! $480 is a lot for airfilters! HAHA!
The "wedge" shaped finned filters... With Thickstun (or plain.) Made in the USA,CNC machined base,KN filter... are $145.00 each. Tony Baron designed them. The knock off's are sand cast, paper eliment. Those retail for $89.95 each. I have the USA made ones in stock. Have 3 of the copies in route.Really just ordered them to have a look-see. Couple shots of the USA Thickstuns and the little finned top jobbies.. ($40.00 each)
They came from Dick Crawford Engineering. He is an old dude out of California. Doesn't have a website or anything, doesn't accept credit cards.... & I threw his little catalog away a week ago. He was mentioned in the issue of Street Rodder that had the article on the new Stromberg 97's that came out 6 (or so) months ago. JH
Very important that you make these choices early. Since the carbs don't do anything now, look at all the money and time you saved by not buying speed equipment.
I have an issue with small opening air cleaners..They really do starve the engine for the air..Just take them off and notice the difference in the performance..Even with the K&N filters in the small opening cleaners you won't get the perfromance..I like the one with the cut spin aluminum cleaner, your getting more air..Some of those cheap cleaners are garbage.. My opinion.. Duane.
Make em yourself. It ain't hard, all you need is a drill press and some hand tools. These are made from 1/4" 6061 T6 aluminum with about 1/16" turned off the top to make a decorative step. 3/16" aluminum would work just as well as would 1/8" except you couldn't cut much of a step in the 1/8" stuff. The adapter ring was installed with three 8/32's that were JB Welded in place. Having a screw over the carb back out can be detrimental to your checking account. If you're concerned about airflow capacity on a strong running tri-power make a large one piece base that adapts to all three carbs. A top to match and a big filter would do the job. And if you're really concerned about performance, get some 1/8" aluminum and make a cold air box. That'll give you several places to put adequate filtration devices. TIG welded it would be very nice, but doing it with rivets would be most cool. Vis a vis the small filters on the triple 2 bbl air cleaner setups . . . if you had 6" filters that take a 2" tall filter element that gives you 12" of filtration area for each one. Three of those equal 36" of filtration area. A typical single four barrel air filter at 2" x 14" equals 28" of filtering area. Step up to a single four barrel filter at 2" x 18" and you have the same filtering area of 36" that the thought-to-be-too-small triple filters have. Step up to 3" tall filters and the numbers run out to: 54" area for the triples. 42" area for the typical 14" four barrel air filter. 54" area for an 18" diameter four barrel air filter. Probably a lost exercise in the math and suggesting you make your own. Seems like an awful lot of wanna-bee hot rodders prefer to buy their stuff. For the most part, ok, but when you need something a litle off-beat it's gonna be up to you. Then again, maybe the triples are just for looks. Seems like an awful lot of smooth running stock engines have them and seldom do I hear a serious engine perking away under a set of triples....
You could go with flame arrestors too or use those bird cage ones that someone did a tech on making them.
Yes, I like the spark arrestor type..Here are repops on my Flathead 3x2...MYKE..Do ou think your Flathead will handle all three 97s at the same time..450 CFMs..Lots.. Duane..
Thanks for the math lesson. At this point I think I will make something different, maybe convert an old scoop into a 3 filter rig or build it from scratch. Definately use K/N filters.
Uncle Max..405 CFMs is a lot, all at once????????? Not sure what CIs the Flathead is but..If it is 279 CIs that would be great..1.5 CFMs per CIs..(basic formula) Duane..
Check out my ad here or my website. I make some spiral ribbed air cleaners with open filters as to not restrick. I also have the matching fuel log available.
Duane - It's been a year, but it seems like it was a rascally 286 incher. I think I told him he'd be married to the mixture screws for a little while, running them straight.
