    Hey Guys,

I have been putting together a 48 ford for a while... I'm almost done FINALLY, but the front end I am having trouble with. It seems like the grill on the car needs the valance to complete it, and hold the front end together. I was just wondering if any of you have ever seen or know of a way to do the front end without that valance piece?

Not sure what you mean by a valance . The grill is bolted at the top to the piece that holds the hood latch, at the sides to the fenders and at the bottom to the front gravel shield. There is an additional splash shield on the bottom but not needed .

I was talking about the front gravel shield- . I'm doing guess work here since I am missing that part. Any clues or pics on how to run without it would be amazing!

I basically just need a decent picture of the way the grill comes together. I am missing both gravel shields I guess?

I'm not real clear on what you need I guess. The grille should come together without a gravel shield. It just bolts on along the bottom.

I can take pics of whatever you need. Let me know how I can help.

Previous owner made mine out of .025 aluminum on a brake. Simple. Bolts to the bottoms of both front fenders.

I'm not sure what that panel is called but they don't seem to reproduce it. My front gravel shield on the 46 looks more like a piece of lettuce than a gravel shield and they don't seem to reproduce them thus so many people running with out a front pan/bumper which personally I don't like the look of but what else are you supposed to do if you can't find the parts?

I'm going to keep looking until next winter personally and then I'm going to buy some tools and sheet metal and bang on it until it resembles what I need :)

Kenny's Rod & Kustom has them. I beleive they call it a front roll pan. It's fibergl*** and sells for $79.00. Give them a call at (330) 872-1932. Good folks to deal with. Good luck with your build. Steve

  12. Drake sells front and rear gravel shields for these cars-I think Denis Carpenter does as well-The piece behind the gravel shield that goes in front of the radiator is important for directing air through the rad.

not that I've found Asphalt Angel. There is a 3 piece rear gravel shield available but I've yet to find a front one

  14. I may be wrong, but I have the front bumper and the gravel shield the original owner took off, and I don't think there ever was anything there.
The bumper brackets mount to the frame, and the "splash/gravel" shield fits over the top of the bumper brackets and behind the bumper. The splash shield bolts to the fenders themselves.
Not sure there was supposed to be anything between the fenders under the fascia.
The rear is the same way. If you remove the rear bumper, you will have a matching gap in the back!

  15. Check page 39 0f Drake's 'Big Spring Sale ' flyer
He has a front pan in the works..

Gotcha. And mike though mine looks like its been to hell and back there is a panel behind the rear gravel shield. It seems like the 46-8 is a mixed bag with some having this and some having that. Heck other then the fender badge it doesn't seem that there's even an even application of options to delineate between the deluxe and super deluxe.

So I wouldn't be surprised if some have this and others have that

  17. Tim,
The more I study mine, the more I realize that Ford was pushing them out the door as fast as they could get the paint to dry! Mine is the only Super Deluxe around here with push-out vent windows.
There probably is no way to accurately describe how these cars should have been appointed. Still more fun than a modern car.......

Those panels are hard to find but they're out there. I bought mine at Charlotte a couple of years ago - 3 spaces down from an old timer who told me that they were made of unobtanium and I'd never find one. I think I gave $15 for it.

    Watch Ebay. They're out there.

Early V8 in San Dimas has these parts but they are not $15. A nice straight one will bring $150-200 all day long at the swap meet.

$150-200 is a fair price for such a critical piece. At least its affordable.

$200 isn't pocket change but most of us could save it up in a couple months.

If he comes back and needs one, I have one to sell....Henry made two different styles. One short (that did not extend very far under grille) and one deep that extended back further under the grille. I have one of each.

i believe the issue is that there are two different configurations of gravel pans.. the ford parts book shows that early 46 was a carry over from 42 the image posted by harrisson is correct for late 46 - 48..
personally I've only ever had 2 of these pans.. both were fibergl***.. one of each style..

so not only are they available.. they have been avail.. in fibergl*** at one time or another..

I will be running a gl*** one.. because I know damn well I'd wreck a steel version..

Looked all over the swap meet for the gravel shield or a front roll pan. No luck. Looks like I'm fabing the part and finally getting the 48 on the road this summer

Mine was built in 45 and doesn't have that flat roll pan in front but it did have it in the back under the pans.

Front and back pans are hard to come across but would be easy enough to make if you didn't mind the lack of a bead in it it'd be really simple.

However on mine the lowest oiece of grill trim fits on the pan.

I was about 14 hours into hammering my rear pan flat enough to use when I realized I could have made one faster lol

So the chrome peices that are usually the bottom of the grill don't exsist on the roll pan?
