Help: 50 Flathead to 47 3 Speed Trans, 9" and 10" Clutch

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Baron Von Mike, Oct 18, 2004.

  1. I'm finding a lot of things out the hard way. My brother, who has a PhD in chemistry, doesn't hesitate to remind me that 1 hour in the library saves 2 weeks in the lab. Boy is he right!

So I've come to my library, also known as the HAMB.

I'm putting a 50 flathead in my 41 pickup. I want to use a 47 open driveline trans. I put the whole motor together and go to mate up the trans only to find out the clutch sprocket in the 50 clutch is too small in diameter for my 47 trans input shaft. STUMPED AGAIN!

I want to use the 50 flywheel and its 9" pressure plate.

My question is this: Is there a 9" clutch that will mate to my 47 trans?

I'm looking at Mac's catalog and it seems part number B7550U will work for what I want. I've called their tech line too, and am waiting on a call back.

    Thanks,

    Mike

I think your '50 is likely 9 1/2", a size not used in early Fords. Check pickup numbers--'48-52 pickups used early splines, and I'm pretty sure they weren't all 11" clutch.
That being said, an early Ford 9" disc would probably work fine with your 9 1/2 pressure plate.
Check with Grimlock--he went through this and found a place that would make him a custom plate.

Thanks Bruce. Always helpful. I think I'm just going to use the early 9" pressure plate, but I'll ask about the 48-52 clutch disk. I was also thinking of turning a 10" clutch disk I have on a lathe, and bring it down to 9.5".

Hey - Just checking in this week. I hooked up with a local shop that made a 9 1/2" plate with the early (1 3/8" maybe?...it's late) splines. Ran me around forty bucks and I think I even got my old discs back! "Can't use em." was what they told me if I remember correct.

I've heard there are issues with clutch chatter with reman. clutches. Honestly can't say if mine was new or reman....and I haven't driven the car yet so I can't comment on performance either. Hope this helped. Contact me if you want more info....I'll be back next week.

On chatter, see recent thread on adjusting pressure plate fingers. I've also heard rebuilt plates are sometimes horribly out of balance.
