i am about to buy a 59 caddy 4 door and i cannot find a vin tag in the front door pillar. is there anyplace else the vin # can be found? the car is regestered and insured . the trim tag is in place obove the fire wall.but the vin isnt on it i just wanna make sure the title matches the car before i haul it home. also can the vin tag that goes on the front door pillar be replaced with a repoduction one?? thanks for any guidance on this matter . john
They have a plastic tag on the left doorjam - not on the hinge pillar, but on the latch pillar. If it's there, I don't know how you can miss it; they're kinda fragile but even on junkyard cars that had been out in the weather the tag was still there (while Mopars with the stainless tag, the tag fell off). However all my Motors Manuals say Cadillac uses the engine number as the ID number, and they match except for the body tag has a two-letter code that ID's the body style and model series. The engine number's on the block on the front, below the head, I forget if it's the left or the right side. As far as reproing the tag, it's laminated plastic, you could probably make one yourself if you can find the right little stamps, and just stamp it into a properly screened, laminated piece of sheet styrene (plastic).
On my '52, there's a number on the top of the frame rail on the passenger's side, just behind the upper contol arm.
"Located on a plate on the flat machined boss, cast on the lower left hand side of the cylinder block, also on the top flange of the frame left hand side member forward from and adjacent to the radiator support, and on a lubrication plate attached to the front face of the left door lock pillar." Actually the VIN is on the trim tag if you know how to read it. The Style number will start with a '59' and then the body style of the car (example - '6337' is a Coupe De Ville), and the Body Number is the squential build number. I looked at a '59 Fleetwood last monday and the VIN was 59MXXXXXX. The first two are the year of the car, the 'M' makes this a Fleetwood (and a style number of 6029) and the last six should match the Body Number. If the VIN's last six were 011711, the Body Number should be 11711. Anyone no anything different? EDIT: To save you a couple trips here are the four door style codes and VIN series code (like the 'M' above) Series 60 - Fleetwood (6029) 59M Series 62 - 4 Dr Sdn (6229) 59A 4 Dr Sdn (6239) 59K Deluxe Sdn DeVille (6339) 59B Deluxe Sdn DeVille (6339?) 59L Series 70 - Brougham (7059X) 59P Series 75 - Fleetwood (6723) 59R Fleetwood Imperial (6733) 59S
just wanted to say thanks. i did find it on the driverside frame rail just before the rad. support. the car is now running and drivingas of mid august . 1 year later .
You can find the VIN on one of these places: On the lower left hand side of cylinder block just above the edge of the oil pan. Frame, top surface of left side bar adjacent to radiator support. Above cast rib on rear portion of crankcase, back of left hand block. Numbered at right angles with Crank. The first 2 digits, 59, represent the year. The third digit, represents the body code letter The last 6 digits represent the vehicles production number for that year. For body code chart go to this site: http://www.rubbertherightway.com/Cadillac Decoding VIN 63 - 64.htm I hope that helps.
im trying to locate the VIN number on the engine on a 59 cadillac we just bought. is it right below the drivers side head, or more down towards the oil pan? having a tough time trying to locate it. its a tight fit in there, so im guessing pictures are out of the question
