My first car was a 53 Pontiac 4 door. If I recall correctly that has a dual range hydro with 4 forward speeds. Those things are usually bulletproof when in good shape. I hope y'all can get him going again. If I had a transmission laying around he could have it, but all my Pontiac stuff is long gone. Your doing a great thing by helping. We all had help when we were younger, I know I did.

check this out , a craigslist add for a 54 motor and trans from the town I live in

    http://www.craigslist.org/sby/pts/138936243.html

thanks to Blackflag for finding it

It must be less than a mile away , same phone prefix , what a trip , I called them and left a message , looks like $600. for motor and trans , I wonder if he will split it up, or will there be a classified add for the motor.

don't even think about swooping on this one .

Thats what hot rodders and hot rodding is all about. If there were more people like you, there would be a lot fewer juvenile delinquents. You're an ace.

    This thread got me thinking.....

When I was younger I broke my fair share of parts and if I didnt have the guidance and assistance of the older guys with knowledge and experience, I might of ended up one of those kids with a big muffler and a wing on a Honda.

All you guys with the negative posts think about that. Do you really want to see more giant fart cans on the road?

JohnDanger, Im just over the hill. I cant offer much in the way of parts or cash. But if you need an extra set of hands or parts picked up over this way shoot me a PM.

Rodknocker, ask your psychiatrist to up your meds, I think your personalities are arguing again...

B29cockgobbler, I'm glad you have such "broad shoulders" because they're the only thing preventing the rest of you from following your head up your ass. What a prick.

Okay, I'm in for a re-build if you'll buy the parts. But first-

    Have you cleaned the screens?
Did you make sure there was enough fluid in it?
did you pull the pan and look for shiny stuff?
Those old cast iron powerglides are tough as hell and hard to tear up.
PM me and we'll figure it out. I'm in Santa Cruz too so it would be a real easy deal.

i'm really glad your tyring to help a kid out. i was in the same boat once. i was 16 and trying to get my 56 plymouth on the road, and every time i did, it seemed like something went wrong. being a kid, i would throw the keys and tell myself i was going to sell it for parts. every time something went wrong, there would always be someone there to lend me a hand or give me some encouragement. i dont know what i'd be doing right now if thoes people hadnt of been there. i think what your doing is great, no matter what some of these motherfuckers say. i just finished my 2nd rod. this hobby is my life now and i'm thankfull no one ever let me give up when i was down.

If theres anything i can do from here(colorado) let me know. if it comes down to it, i'm in for a few bucks, too. just pm me.

Its a Hydromatic , and I haven't even looked inside , way out of my area of expertise , I don't even own a single automatic trans , gotta have 15 or so sticks , if it was a stick shift it would be back in the car by now , but Yorgatron has a bunch of knowledge on the Hydros , so I think he will get to the bottom of it on Wednesday , but if I can get that trans/ motor that is for sale on craigslist up here in Scotts Valley, then we might just get lucky and be done just like that. If it comes down to a Hamb thrash I will let you know , and I will host it .

Very interesting opinions. If the going rate in your area is $1500-$2000 to go thru a dual range hydro, maybe it might make sense to have this hard working, intelligent young fella take a hard look at benching his trans, with the long term goal of learning these great transmissions inside and out. The few older people who know them are usually not interested in doing them after retiring from 30-40 years in the repair trade. In the near future someone that knows them will be an asset to everyone in the car hobby, and can count on all the work they can handle, and be well paid for the knowledge.
I enjoy the personality of a pre-'55 Pontiac too much to ever consider an engine swap ... well, maybe a 331 Cad ... Hope the car is a Star Chief !
Good luck to everyone getting the guy back on the road, and hope to see good news come out of this !

This thread hits close to home for me. I'm 21, NOBODY in my family is into cars, but I bought my 57 Chevy with my own bread when i was 16 and drove the hell out of it. That TURBOGLIDE ate shit 4000 miles later, and if it weren't for the great guys in my club, I would have been at wits ends and probably gotten out of the hobby. I was that kid. And one day, this kid will be the guy helping some other newbie, it's a wonderful vicious cycle that keeps this hobby alive not only on the streets but in the hearts of those who love it.

This kid isn't a check guy. HE got the motor running and got the car back on the road after it was sitting in a field...then after he'd spent all his hard-earned money...the trans shits the bed. Google "frustration" and that will come up a match.

This fella lost his parents, spent all his bread, and put in lots of hard work so far... I think he knows more about "life's lessons" than 99% of the kids out there. Sometimes a helping hand is needed. Fuck all you nay sayers

After reading this post I thought back to when I was a little long hair, dicking with cars blindly since I didn't have an old man at home to teach me the ropes. A few of the car guys in town helped my sorry ass out when they didn't have to, either showing by me how it was done, or giving me good deals on parts so I didn't blow my entire paycheck from my 3.00 an hour dishwashing job to get it going again. I'm reasonably sure if they hadn't had done that I'd be thinking back to my younger days of driving a cavalier or something equally gay. You're a cool guy for stepping in and trying to help.

I posted a new 235 Offy dual intake set up in the classifieds for sale for $350.00, if someone here will go ahead and buy it and just paypal johndanger to help this kid out, that will at least be a chunk towards his expenses to get it going or to do a swap. I'd put it up for auction with the kid getting the proceeds, but it sounds like the kid could use the dough now.

  24. This is a pretty neat thread. It does my ol' cynical heart good to see the help being offered. YorgiGeorgie do know the B&W hydros, so maybe if he helps the kid, the young man might find out he likes transmission work and find himself a new career path. Who knows. As an Olds fiend who likes the hydro, I can't believe I'm saying this, but the 350/350 for free option sounds like the best deal. UNLESS the kid wants to tear into the trans with George. But George is kinda scary looking!

The negative comments, like most negative comments serve no purpose except to stir drama. Tsk tsk.

    Good luck.

John, you sure as hell don't have to explain yourself here......you and I and a bunch of others on this board know damn well you are doing the right thing for this kid. And contrary to what some think the "pay it forward" idea is great. Now, with that said put me in for $20 if you get a fund goin'.

You need to let the kid know that people all over the country are trying to kick in and help him. Ask him if he think's he'll have that kinda friends from the B.R.M.B (bus riders message board) or the C.A.U.C.M.B. (Crappy assed used car message board).

I always try to help other people because, someday it will be me that needs help, and my bank account will be empty, but it will be like I hit the karma lottery. If it comes to it, let me know where to send the $20

Don't let him get rid of it, My first car got hit and run and I couldn't find parts for it anywhere and i gave up and took it to the junkyard so at least other people could find parts for theirs. I cryed when I left, and now I have the vin# tattooed on my arm. Getting rid of that car was the dumbest thing I've ever done, and trust me there have been some things that came close.

the neg comments do serve a purpose, they make those that want to help THAT MUCH MORE willing to help

its kinda like kicking a dog that nipped you to "teach him a lesson" just to have the dog come back to rip one of your fingers off

sounds like the kid has done a good share of work himself, and isnt some prissy bitch from a rich family or some shit, so i see no reason not to help him

anytime someone needs my help on some project, im happy to help, as long as they do their fair share

    clean this
    clean it more
    mark this
    cut this
    measure this
    glue this
    file this
    grind this
    do that
    put these in order
    get me a beer
    MORE BEER DAMNIT
    tighten all these bolts

by the time the projects done, weve both worked our asses off, the other guy might not have done the stuff that require the vast knowledge, but at the same time i wasnt just giving the person a freebie, they worked plenty too

and theres nothing wrong with 4 door cars, especialy when your young and 50% of your friends dont have cars, meaning YOU get to haul them around

later in life, he can always cut it up and turn it into a 2 door if he so wishes

props for tryin to help the kid out, hope it all works out, and at this rate it sounds like it will

  30. I remember when I was that age (50 years ago) and had to depend on help from the older guys and their experience. I'm down for 10 bucks if you decide to start collecting.
