long story short: pulled the econoline out of the shop yesterday, and between the open zoomies and a hit/miss idle, I managed to put a 4ft long, 4" wide rub mark down the side of the bed. Lucky there's no dent, and the rub was done by painted wood not metal so what I've got is this big brown stripe on a pure white paint job. Paint is implement white. I'm thinking rubbing compound and lots of elbow grease. Not looking for perfect, just looking for reasonable. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hey, Sounds like you got off lucky! You didn't say if this was a two stage paint finish, but perhaps some rubbing with a medium rubbing compound in the dirrection of the stripe. If this doesn't pull out the mark, perhaps a light coloursanding with some 600 wet & dry (only in the area of the mark) will remove the majority of it, followed by some polishing & waxing of the area. pimpin paint nailed it. only thing i would try different if compound doesn't do it, is lighter grit paper to start (1500 or so). you can always get more aggressive if needed but removing deep scratches may leave you with less than enough paint to rub. sorry this happened and good luck.
