Hey guys, The shop I work at now owns the Silver Dollar Willys g***er. We got the motor fired today, but the car wanted to lurch forward (luckily the brakes are good!). Car sounds awesome, but we can't find neutral so we can let it idle. The question is; what gears are on this transmission? Shouldn't there be a neutral to clear out carbs, etc while racing? Seems like the shifter only has 3 detents. Tried it with the car in all 3 places, with and without the lever pulled, which I guess is to pressurize it? Low vs. High gear? Can anyone give me a quick rundown on these, saw all the installation instructions in another thread, but nothing to show operating instructions. Everyone in town seems to be dumbfounded about it, even the old racers. Thanks! Paul
The hyrdo-stick did use a clutch and the ****** had no nuetral I don't think. But, I am not sure. I had one for my MEL once, but never used it. I sold it UncleScooby.
If you've got a floor shift ( I ***ume you have ) neutral is all the way forward. Gear selection from front to back is Neutral, 4th 3rd 2nd 1st and reverse all the way back. Reverse also is used as "park" .
The Hydro was an automatic. There was a "clutch hydro" but that was a separate animal. One more thing I was told by Gene Altizer, don't use first gear when you launch. Put it in second. When you put the hammer down it will automatically be in first. He said 1st is so low you could easily over wind the motor by trying to manually shift from 1st to 2nd. That's the way I ran mine.
My Hydrostick (installed in the family '51 Chevy in '59) has neutral all the way back and to the right. Reverse is all the way forward and to the right. I agree with 550Coupe - when my dad drag raced the car, he always started out in 2nd. I inherited the car when my older brother p***ed away and I don't know WHAT TYPE OF TRANSMISSION FLUID to use. Any ideas? I called B&M but all of the "old" guys are long gone and no one could help me....
Neutral will be at one end of the selecter and reverse at the other. Up from reverse will be first (ONLY if it is a true B&M or has been modified to do this. Stock has NO first detent only Lo range 1st-2nd)after that is second and so on till you reach the last detent and that will be neutral. Oh and put it in reverse when you shut it off it will engage the PARKING Paul. Then when your about to fire it up put it in Neutral. GET A BOOK! Hydros are their own Beast.....When they are set up right there is nothing like them. I hope you have Strong U-Joints Find the ones that are not drilled for Zerks and are SOLID they live longer.
