Help: Brazing/Copper Welding Advice Needed

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Baron Von Mike, Oct 25, 2005.

  1. I've done lots of soldering, and have been MIG welding for about 6 months. I now need to fix a 1" crack in my upper radiator tank. The crack is just under the upper input pipe. Upper tank is copper.

I have the torch, flux, etc. Just looking for a few pointers before I get started. My buddy who loaned me the tools gave me a few tips, but I thought I'd ask the collective brain trust here.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Biggest tip is just GET IT CLEAN before soldering.

    Don't braze it,Solder is a better choice.

    Use a small,soft,flame,and a light touch.
Make sure it's CLEAN.Much easier if you can lay the rad down flat.

Brazing requires higher temperatures, which would ruin all the
    existing soldered joints.

Also, silver solder comes in a number of different melting temps. Get a lo temp solder, but not the lowest, so if you need to fix something later you're not screwed. And like everyone else said, make sure it's really clean and use flux.

  5. Thanks for the replies. Looks like all the stuff I have will allow me to do the lower heat soldering. I'll get it done on Saturday. We'll see how it goes.
