The State of California DMV has a successful "Legacy License Plate Program" that allows the reproduction o f 1960's style plates with black background and yellow lettering/numbers. not as Cool as original plates but, better than running the white standard issue plates. a new Bill in the works to vote on will allow for 50's, 70's and 80's style plates. contact the SEMA Action Network - semasan.com - to get link to fill out to automatically notify your local legislators in Calif about need to support this.

I get to play a**hole again..............but why???. We already have a YOM program (which they should extend the program into the 80s plates) and I've seen enough new cars running around with black plates, I like to see old plates on old cars. I like that some vehicles still have black or blue plates because someone cared enough to keep them together over time. I like that people can trade or sell old plates so someone else can run them on the same year vehicle. I get the idea of wanting to run '56 "style" plates on your old model A or something, but isn't this just the same as the fake Olds valve covers on a SBC.
Not really, the result is an owner can have a say on how he is identified on the street. The machine of choice and a tag motif of choice. Gives one a larger sense of identity. The valve cover thing is only saying,,, "Wish I had the do-rei-me to build that piece of history"
I can't get behind this the way it is implemented. They allow these so called vintage plates to be used on any year vehicle. It just devalues the genuine plates. Now, any idiot can put black plates on their Subaru outback. Ranks right up there with a Son's of Anarchy tee shirt. POSERS!
That's just it, they're a "piece of history" and should be left that way. I just think new car deserve new white plates, not some weird looking fake plate with way to many digits (7) to be real or another "MONYMAN" in old colors on another Range Rover. The '56 plate doesn't even look like a real '56 plate, so putting it on an old car will look like fake valve covers. I guess it's too personal for me.
I didnt say that. If the state only allowed these vintage plates on the year range of vehicle they were originally issued to, then I'd get behind it. Black plates on '63 to '69, gold from '56 to '62 for example. But when the sole purpose to to just generate money by allowing their use on any vehicle including current models....nope! It devalues the original plates. My Ol' Furd f100, a 1965 model, has blue plates. Not the original black ones. Now I'm thinkin' theres no reason to get black plates on it, when some soccer moms 2023 SUV can have 'em too. My '65 Karmann Ghia has black plates. The one originally issued when new. Those have value....at least they used to.
This will not devalue the original plates, no more than repop parts have devalued good original parts. Example: '32 Ford grille. The period correct nerds will never settle for "fake" items, and pay premium for original stuff, regardless of condition. BTW, I have YOM plates on my car and 2 motorcycles...and am getting black legacy plates for my Black Tacoma, just looks better.
I see where you’re coming from, I’ve no idea on old plate values. I’d assume the new ones, if it passes, won’t be a spot on match to the originals. Ie the “new” black plates. But I also see the states side of things. They open up to more people and generate more $$.
That's exactly it, a cash grab. I don't like new cars, but I see the need for them for other people......I just don't like to see old stuff (even fake) on new cars.
The new 60's plates do look fake but a lot better than the white plates. Problem I have is they tack on a extra fee for them every year. Pass
