As an owner/operator of a few Model T's, Model A's, and a 33' Chevy I kinda remember stopping distance and pucker factor being the main reason.

  2. X2 that any auto trans conversion will also require an open drive conversion on the rearend. You could do open conversion on stock rear, some added upper torque links of some design would be strongly suggested. Or with a different rearend swapped in, might as well go full swap and put a modern 4 cyl engine with an automatic trans out of a donor vehicle. Like the Ranger set-up suggested. But then need adapters to get the bolt pattern right.

I had an acquaintance with a S-10 4 cyl and trans swapped into a model A sedan about 20 years ago. Used a 9-inch Ford rear out of a truck or van to keep the bolt pattern. drove that Model A all over the place, although I think it was a manual trans. Same principle though for an automatic swap.

If it weren't matched up to a 4 cylinder transverse mounted engine, I would use the old Austin America 4 speed automatic. It did really well behind the 58 hp Austin 4 cylinder, so it should work with your old 4. Trouble is finding them and the transaxle.

You might want to check on a Jatco automatic from a Ford Courier. They are small in size and strong!

If you really wanted a hand operated clutch you could add a vacuum assist as used on VW semi auto in the seventies and Hudson in the forties and fifties. It looks like a brake booster. Might even be possible to adapt a brake booster.

Both VW and Hudson eliminated the clutch pedal entirely. VW was actuated by an electric switch in the shift lever.
