    Hey Fellas,

I just pulled my intake and re-sealed due to an oil leak out to the rear RTV. This is my issue... I pulled the intake off and removed the carb from the intake. Cleaned the area I was going to reseal with brake clean and re installed per the HAMBers recomendations on my preivious post. Anyhow, I re installed everything, set the timing and when I fire the motor up, I get a WHINING / SCREAMING sound that sounds like a belt being dragged on a froven pulley, but its not a pulley or belt issue. This sound is coming out of the carb and its loud... My neighbor is a motor head and I had him come over for a listen and he's stumped as well, soiad he never hear anything like that. What I have is a 650 cmf Edelbrock electric choke mounted on a Edelbrock performer intake. My engine is a SBC 327.

Any thoughts?? What do you think I may have done wrong!!??

    Thanks again,

    Jeff

vaccuum leak is my guess spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner around the intake and carb base and see if the motor speeds up as it sucks in the carb cleaner through the vaccuum leak you might be doing that all over again!!

make sure the distributor is all as it should be, seated on the oil pump drive shaft, rotor and cap on properly. long shot but worth looking into

  5. Addition to the vacuum leak post, are the gaskets for the base plate put on the right way? is the base of the carb flat? They do warp under too much torque. I have seen this before, and it was an internal vacuum leak in the carb. If it just started with what you just did, undo what you just did and you'll see what you did wrong.

  6. vacuum leak, use brake cleaner like said above. make sure the base gasket is the correct one or didn't move.

I'll check the gaskets that sandwich the square looking mounting plate that mounts in between the edelbrock intake and edelbrokcarb. From what i remember, it didnt matter how they went on, kinda dummy proof (i hope). But who knows, maybe i'm the dummy...

By the way, the car wont even kick over enough for me to spray the carb/brake cleaner as mentioned. It sorta souds like its outta gas and wont fully kick over. durring the inital attempt at kicking over is when i get the screaming noise from the carb.

I couldn't belive this... Had my nephew helping me when we put this thing back together over the weekend. Anyhow, its my fault and I should have caught it - the exhaust crossover block off plate was removed and put back on upside down. I did realize he removed and replaced it - that's why I didn't check it... With that being said, the carb was about 1/32" from fully seating onto the intake. Thereby causing (AS POINTED OUT) a major vacuum leak...

Thanks for the help guys... I figured this out on Sunday but forgot to post the outcome.
