I need some assistance! I own a 1947 Chevrolet Stylemaster. Like many old Chevrolets, mine has a two piece windshield with a piece of stainless steel molding in the center. To make a long story short, the molding came loose last fall and I discovered that one of the previous owners had only attached it with black weather stripping adhesive. I plan on installing a <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1lace>Fulton</st1lace></st1:City> visor before spring which is braced in the center by the molding. I really need to figure out how to attach this molding correctly. I discovered that there is a metal strip in the center of the two piece windshield that is covered by the stainless steel molding. I removed to screws on the interior of the windshield hoping to get the metal strip loose only to discover that it is on the inside of the body, and can only be removed with removing the windshield. I am very new to the old iron, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated since I am new to the old iron.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
The out side part should have a slide in metal strip with 4 threaded holes, that take 10-32 machine screws. sounds like your missing that part or you would not have asked that question. I've seen some that people have made. where they have inserted a strip that had 4 holes that were drilled using the inside part as a driil guide and used sheet metal screws. careful the screws are not to long. you can dimple the outside stainless
There are four or five screws on the inside of the windshield (down the center) that run through the center interior molding, through the rubber gasket, and into a metal strip on the outside of the windshield. I thought that I could remove those screws, remove the metal strip, insert the rubber gasket in the stainless molding, insert the metal strip in the rubber gasket, and install the screws. But the metal strip is on the inside of the window flange on the body, therefore, can not be removed from the outside.
That strip is actually permanently attached to the body at the pinch welds. The strip inside the car is the only one that is removable.
If the the metal strip that I am discussing is permanently attached to the body at the pinch welds per what cleatus is saying, am I missing a second metal strip per what NONAME is saying? DAMN! And I thought this was going to be a simple job.
There is the strip that is attached to the body and then another strip that bolts up from the inside. Other than that, there is just the gasket and the outer stainless trim.
Apparently I have all the components required, but I can not firgure out how it goes together to save my life! Obviously, the gasket goes inside the stainless trim, but how does the gasket attached to the body? I must be extremely dense!
The center stainless trim is just a friction fit that snaps over the top of the gasket after all else is assembled into the car. To remove it, you just need to -very carefully- try to get a hook tool under an edge of it and try to pry (widen it) enough to come off the gasket. Tough to do without mangling the stainless, but it can be done with patience. To assemble it, it is the last item to install, and is done so by flexing it wider and forcing it over the gasket until is pops into place.
not exactly sure how 47's are put together, but if you are using a visor with the center clamp friction fit over the trim wouldn't hold it. 49's have the same deal with the center strip. the outside stainless has clips with threads in them and the same screw from the inside trim also holds the outside trim at the same time. chevsofthe40s.com may sell those clips, or perhaps a generic new clip from your local body/paint supply store has them. ...or maybe 47's are different
