Hello folks- I recently purchased a 1949 Chevy Fleetline. Plans are to make it a mild custom, nice cruise night car. Previous owner installed a newer straight six and I’m trying to identify it. Block casting number is 3833057 which my research showed to be a 194. However the seller told me it was a 230 ( I know, not a big difference, but I’d like to confirm). The distributor stamped “number” is the one that’s really odd: TOIIIAL Can’t find that one anywhere. Any help or information is greatly appreciated.
AL was used in Chevelles, in 1965-66, it's a 194. finding the casting date code near the starter could confirm the year. look for something like A 3 5 and report back
yup, block cast Jan 5th, 1965. The assembly date in the stamping is 0111 which is Jan 11th, 1965. Now you know what your engine is from, and that folks don't always know what they have, or don't always tell you what they have.
You just missed a good opportunity on parts. Studebaker used the Chevy 194" as the base engine in their 1965 cars. Studebaker International had truckloads of leftover short blocks and parts for cheap. Since few Stude guys were rebuilding these, they fire-saled most of the Chevy parts to another classic Chevy warehouse. jack vines jack vines
