I had a stock 2 bbl carb from my '65 283 that I loaned to one of my roundy round buddies and now he's not to be found. I wanted it back cause I'm looking to do a tri-power set up on my sbc. I know it was a 2GC. Offy makes dual bolt pattern trips manifolds and I was going to use R-chesters to keep cost down. Going to swapmeet this Saturday and need to know what to look for and what to stay away from. I was told any G series carb would work. Neighbor has a carb off of a '74 sbc 400 that is a freebie but it is not a G. I know center carb should have choke and be my main carb and correct linkage will open others the farther my foot mashes the go pedal, also told to get rid of the accelorator pumps on the outside two. I guess I'd look for the cast iron base and potmetal body and of course the right bolt pattern Right? When it comes to rebuild time is there jets and kits still available for these? Seems that it wouldn't matter what it came off of(Buick, Pontiac, Olds)as long as it was a "G" series...correct? What other series will work? I'm running two 4bbl 500 cfm Carters carbs on an Offy now and to much for my 283 mouse.
Curley, look at the Oct 2001 Street Rod Builder. Nevermind the upside down linkage and pay attention to the build up. You can do it without buying the Automotion parts($500) but I wonder sometimes. As for the carbs, I try to find early 60s versions. I gopt lucky with that 348 setup I got from you and found some 68ish carbs that were identical. You can take 3 choked carbs and peel off the chokes fron 2 of them.
G51&T thanks guys. That carb in the pic was the one I "gave" away. I'll try a couple of boneyards around here that still have some of the 60's-70's stuff in it. Gettin'hard to find! Found a '56 Imperial more door! Popped the hood and hemi was gone! Other side of lot found a '59 Buhog but drums heisted! Maybe I'll look under the hoods of some of those 67-72 GM trucks they got out there?
Greezy51 I can't help but notice the spacer on your front linkage. I had mine set up with a spacer origonally and it created an enormous bind when it engaged. I ended up with the Rod ends almost next to each other to get rid of the bind and smooth out the stroke. TZ
You keep mentioning '70s carbs, I'm pretty certain that the seventies carbs are bigger and more "smog friendly." Actually, I know they are because I bought like six of them the first time I went looking because I didn't bring a carb gasket with me to check their base size. These carbs aren't too awful hard to find, however, I even found a tripower secondary!
