Folks Of Interest Help Find Gene Winfield’s Lifetime Collection - So Much Is Missing - Mostly California

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by trulyvintage, Mar 6, 2025.

  1. As Spring begins - so does the swap meet
season and car show circuit - your help
is needed - please lend a hand.

This is Gene Winfield’s friend Bob
who lives in the Detroit, Michigan area
and is providing space for a museum
    honoring Gene.

    IMG_5247.jpeg

This is Gene’s friend Kyle who lives in
Paso Robles and was with Gene as
he ended his journey in this world.

    IMG_5194.jpeg

Circumstances at the end of Gene’s
life led to the disappearance of
items that he created and collected
    including shop equipment - parts
cars - photos - trophies and awards.

Hopes are they can be returned
to the Family and shared with
the public to educate and inform.

Updates will be posted as to specific
items missing - please keep an eye
out and if you come across something
    let Kyle know.

How the hell did this happen?

  5. That isn’t relevant at this point.
    There are other threads discussing
the events that led up to this.

    Before Gene’s lifetime collection
scatters to the wind - perhaps these
items can be recovered for the Family.

found this just checking around online for Winfield stuff. maybe eBay can provide details to Gene's Family, unless they already know where it is. 20250307_115620.jpg 20250307_115638.jpg 20250307_115656.jpg

    I will pass that along.

  8. If you look through the open doors you can see someone's shadow. I gotta say, that shadow looks suspiciously similar to the one that follows me around on sunny days. Next time I see him, I'll be sure to get a pic and I will attempt to follow him too, if I can keep a safe distance away

Gene had an auction recently so, relevant or not in your eyes, are people supposed to be looking for stolen property or are people supposed to be looking for stuff that Gene himself sold at the auction he had before he passed?

If this isn't stuff from the auction, then wouldn't the first person you need to contact be his unsavory "health care worker" slash "sparing partner"?

  9. Read this thread starting with the first post.

The images I am sharing are provided by
    Gene Winfield’s friend Kyle.

The eBay link provided by a member
has been sent to my contact in Paso Robles
who is active in the recovery process.

  10. @Sanford&Son did this in 2017.
It was in Gene Winfield’s shop.
Where it is now is uncertain
    as of this posting.

are you saying all the stuff in the pictures has been stolen?

  14. Every image I post comes from Kyle
in Paso Robles - every image is unaccounted
for property of Gene Winfield’s estate
that Kyle and other folks who took care
of Gene are actively trying to recover
for the Family and (hopefully) the
    Detroit Museum.

    If anyone recognizes these items
or any other items listed for sale
that do not have proof of purchase
    directly from Gene Winfield or
his estate - please contact Kyle or if you
contact me I will put you in touch with him.

This is the list of what was sold at the auction and none of the items shown in the posted photos were in the auction. I'd think that about half the list went to the same scrap yard. The pieces of recently used equipment in the auction where just shop equipment that might give bragging rights for the person who bought them and has them in their shop but aren't special "Gene Winfield" museum worthy pieces.
    https://bid.bidfastandlast.com/ui/auctions/109285
I'd suggest that anyone not familiar with the auction list go over it and see for themselves.

That sign shown above in the Ebay listing was not on the auction list and that info may be the best clue to start hunting for the lost pieces.
I am not finding anything on Ebay connected with that rog154441 who sold the sign. Maybe someone who is a lot better at Ebay searches than I am can figure that out.

I know the property was sold on 11-25-2024.Where all these things missing then?

  17. Great question. If the shrapnel left over from the auction was sold as "property, buildings, and contents" ...

Or, were the missing "smalls" stored somewhere else? The large machinery, if they didn't sell at auction could have easily be included in the sale of the property. Surely someone in the know would .... know, no doubt, you know.

  19. I haven't died recently (to my knowledge) and I haven't spoken to anyone who has but are we (the human race) absolutely positive the old saying "you can't take it with you" is still valid in this day and age considering how much technology has advanced in recent years?

Since it's below the OP to answer any questions the unknowing audience might have, ie guys who don't obsess over Gene Winfield, I'll break this down. Remember, the where, why, and how are not relevant.

Just find his stolen junk somewhere around the globe, identify it by cellphone pics alone, no description, buy it from the thief out of the kindness of your heart since nothing can be proven one way or the other, send shipping guy a PM, he'll get you in contact with a guy who cares, and you give the junk to the guy who cares. For the museum. It's that easy.

  21. I am sharing information on
    Gene Winfield’s missing property
on behalf of Kyle Hogue and others
who are trying to recover it.

    I am not shipping or
    transporting any of these items.

I'd assume the intent was to move the Gene specific items of the "large equipment" to storage
The louver press, planishing hammer and small English wheel come to mind there. Some of the stuff was just run of the mill sheet metal shop equipment that he no doubt used but aren't special, Then in the bottom image here you see Gene with his "Winfield bender" behind him and a wall and floor full of special tools he made. Anyone who ever took one of his metal working classes knows about the Winfield bender and knows that he advocating making your own special body tools. That stuff needs to be in the museum as it fully relates to him.
With most of that equipment you have to have a pretty good forklift to move it and with the planishing hammer a pretty good truck or trailer to haul it off. Thing is you can't set it up in your shop and play show and tell with bragging rights as too many people now know that it was most likely stolen.
