hey guys so ive been working on the chassis for my frame swap on my 55.2 chevy pu. im using a 84 chevy c10 frame for the donner frame and me and my dad are trying to figure out what gas tank i could use for it. the frame i bought did not have a gas tank with it so i have nothing to work with. i was wondering if anyone has done a swap like this what gas tank did you use? what donner car/truck tank did you use? and how did you put the tank in? where did you locate it? im trying to get the tank out of the cab of the 55 and make it a little safer. please let me know if you have done this or if you have any info or input thanks guys kujo
I would put it behind the seat. I have owned several of these trucks and none of them ever went up in a ball of fire. Sorry this is not a real answer to your question, remember the controversy about the 73-up trucks that DID catch fire if hit from the side, and those tanks were not in the cab. It would make for a bit more room, so I see the rationale for that. Anyway, someone will have an answer for you soon.
i would keep it behind the seat if i had a good tank behind it but as it sits right now the tank leaks from the filler neck and i would rather try and get a new tank to go under the frame rather than getting a new one to put back behind the seat and i do not have the 84 tank and was not planing on using the 84 tank because it was mounted outside of the frame i am try to find a tank that can mount inside the frame some how but thank you for the input kujo
My truck is currently on a 85 k5 4x4 chassis that I utterly hate, but it has a 15 gal fuel cell located in between the frame rails at the rear of the truck. It works pretty well. I have spaced the rear xmembers on a factory chassis that I intend to swap to shortly so that I can use the same fuel cell and keep the room behind the seat.
A good tank option for the 48-54 AD series trucks is the 55-57 Chevy car tanks. The filler goes in the side of the tank. This allows you to install a filler neck in the rear of the driver side rear fender. If done right, it looks like it belongs there. It also avoids having a filler neck in the bed of the truck, which doesn't work real good if you haul stuff in your bed.
I did one years ago on a '65 C30 truck. I used a '65 or so Chevy passenger car tank between the frame rails behind the cab. I had to make up a frame for it and ran the filler out the drivers side of the bed. It was a tad low, but it was fine. I cut off the filler & extended it with some gas hose and attached the neck to that. Bob
You are probably going to just put one behind the rearend, between the frame rails. There are lots of universal tanks, or specific examples like ibflyin suggested. The stock tank for your frame would not work, insufficient clearance outside the frame rail to the body/bed/running boards/etc.
Have a tank coming today to do that in my COE ('73 frame out back) - will give some storage room behind the seat too. 17 gallon tank - Won't rust anyway - it's plastic. http://www.leadmineproducts.com/servlet/the-848/New--dsh--1949-to/Detail Already have this for a bed floor mount filler. Speedway Motors has the same thing at twice the price - got mine here: http://stores.ebay.com/Boatpartsman...tml?_nkw=flip+top&submit=Search&_sid=20697348
Rec'd the TANKS gas tank and fit it up - going to fit like a glove in the '73 frame. The angle of the rear crossmember even matches the taper of the tank. Impressed with TANKS quality - that plastic (polyethelene) is really thick - surprised me....
If you don't want an original in cab tank a mustang tank should fit between the frame rails in the back. I did an Effie ( '53) on an '88 S-10 frame when I first got on the HAMB and I used a spin aluminum tank against the cab in the bed with a 3 gallon aux tank under the bed.
a brand new stock tank behind the seat with the filler neck and maybe even a sending unit shouldnt cost more than $190. may be your cheapest option, and easiest
Hey guys the mustang tank is too wide for the frame I ended up going with a universal tank under the bed from tanks inc Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
