help help HELP!! ( another dang "what's it worth thread)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by earl schieb, Sep 28, 2009.

  1. Friend of a friend has bought a 40 Ford sedan, and thinks it's junk unless it has a SBC/MustangII/etc.....I'm pretty sure I can get EVERYTHING---flathead/trans/rear end/front end.... I just need some kind of guideline as to what it's worth. I'm talking everything chassis-wise except the frame. The flatty is running and has two carbs---that's all I know, and this guy won't have the car until this weekend.
He wants a SBC(I got one) and a 700-4R(I got one) and an S10 rear(whoa--I got one of them too) I figure I can do some trading heh heh heh ;)
The plan--I've got a 28 CC pickup body and a new square tube frame, and I've talked big about doing this truck--just don't know where to start. All the 40 stuff...seems like I could have it up and going REAL quick.

I know LITTLE about pre-war stuff---you that know me know I'm a 50s/60s car guy, so I'm asking nicely for some help or opinions. Thanks, y'all.

The "decent starting place" unrestored '40 Sedans that I have seen over the last six months have been in the $3,500-$4,500 price range. I seem to recall seeing one for $6,000.

  4. Probably looking at $1000 to $2000 depending on just how nice it is and just what intake is on the motor. Put it this way, if the guy will swap for the 350, 700R4 and S10 rearend? Don't even stop to think, do it before he changes his mind. You can always find that late model stuff again.

I think the last two posts didn't read your post, they missed the part where you're asking what the motor, trans, and front and rearend would be worth, not the entire car.

I know the going rate for a '40 rear has been around $150, more if it's clean and has good brakes; a flatty motor $500 might get you a core; beyond that I've never tried to price anything.

  6. No, no, you're misunderstanding me.........I'm asking for a ballpark for the drivetrain pieces---engine, trans, rear, front axle assy, brakes, bones, springs---he's gonna build a street rod:)o) out of the sedan.....;)

  10. If he's not going to use it you may as well. The steering, too, I'm sure he won't use that. Hell, maybe you should convince him to buy one of those aftermarket frame deals and just let you have the whole rolling chassis from the car.

    How about this?

All your late model stuff plus you pull his "junk", no, no, I'm not saying pulling on his junk like that! I meant you do the labor to get his "goodies" off, no, no I'm not saying getting his goodies off like that! I really mean you remove the vintage 40 stuff and swap even steven for your parts! Geez can't even make a serious post without you guys thinking I'm being a perv! ;)

  12. I am a f'in punk. :D Couldn't resist....

I'm kinda with rusty on this....it sounds as if he doesn't care about the originality...might as well buy a complete chassis & sell you the rolling chassis. It looks as if you don't need the frame, but you can get rid of it easily enough.

Going back to the original question, I'm thinking $1500-2000, assuming that everything is in good shape, no oil use, etc., but no aftermarket parts but the intake. Then start subtracting for your parts...Maybe I'm a bit high, just going by prices locally.

EARL,,YOU'RE THE F'n PUNK THIS TIME!!!! Here those parts aren't as much in demand so the swap looks more even if you do the removal labor as stated earlier.

  14. Trade straight across and the both of you will be happy. Powertrain for powertrain sounds like a more then reasonable swap. I would not give/offer him any money if I had all the parts he wanted to use. Remember you save him time and effort in his build by already having the parts he wants and that is worth something to most people.-Weeks

    straight trade...

  16. $1,000 is top $dough$ for the stuff. $500 is better 'cause most of the stuff will have to be all rebuilt anyway.

Trade strsight across. If you remove the parts you will take them home in good condition. If someone else removes them they may use the gas axe or other tool to remove the "junk"...

I bought a running gear off another guy back a few years. I talked myself into how much time I would save by going this route. The block was cracked and I paid too much.

Since the motor is still in the car, take it out and drive it. How good is it? If the motor heats or blows water out when you load it, figure that in on the price. He may owe you a couple of bucks on the trade. He is getting rid of old junk and getting newer stuff.

  20. If you know where I can buy complete '40 Ford running gear setups with a running engine with a 2-pot intake to boot for $500, let me know, I'll buy a dozen at that price.

  21. Bump for second shift.......then I'll let this one fall ;)

    And rephrased...
You're at a swap meet or a buddy's garage and you see...
A complete 40 flathead with two pots and a trans bolted to it--what do ya think's a fair price?
Same for a front axle assy. And the rear end/torquetube. While we're at it, how much for the pedals? Radiator? Steering column/box? Wheels, even?

I'm looking for individual prices for the assemblies. Don't wanna give too much, but don't wanna cheat this guy either:eek: I know, it's all relative, geographical, emotional......I just don't have a clue(other than the advice given here already--thanks, btw:)) Might need this info in case he doesn't want MY pieces ;)

Thanks guys, and I'll shut up now.
