I have a 59a I rebuilt last winter with an isky max 1 stock head stock new ignition, rebuilt 59 carb, fuel pump from macs and new 12v wiring.I cleaned and sealed the tank. She starts by just touchin the key, idles great and for the most part accelerates great with the occasional stutter. That stutter happens mostly when cruisin at 40-55.Its almost like the ignition shut off then back on again with no backfire. Most the time she purrrs so nice.I pulled the plugs and they are beige. Im not sure if this is a ignition or a junky carb problem. Can someone please point me in a direction I dont think throwin money at it will help me. Thanks for readin. Aaron
Checked the fuel lines? Have any collapsed? Check the drain on the bottom of the tank. You may have some **** stopping up the line as it comes out of tank.
I had a few problems. One was the new points, 20 bucks, weak springs sometimes did not close all the way, put old pair back in. Also mud daughter had climbed down my vent line to nest. After changing back to the single carb setup, reworking &swapping the fuel pump and pushrod I finally found normal operation with gas cap off. Pulled the tank, reamed out the nest, flush the tubing, made a filter on the vent. A weekend I could have done something useful.
Could be fuel starvation. Check float level. Check fuel volume output. A break in the fuel line (or a loose fitting) is like ****ing a soda through a straw with a hole in it, it will get up to pressure after the pump, but before the pump, volume is reduced. Also, since the stock pump pulls (instead of pushes), you may have a break or loose fitting and it won't necessarily leak.
Allright Im checkin the fuel stuff all the lines are new and I took the line off and use an air gun to clear it out back to the tank. Still runs like *** even worse with the new dist. old one isnt as bad.sooo frustrating! The search continues.
Is it slightly out of time? I had some of the same problems and mine was out of time ever so slightly. Made as world of difference!
definatly sounds like a timing issue to me if swapping the distributor changes how it runs... what ya running for a distributor?
Due you have a fuel filter between the tank and fuel pump. I had a simular problem the flathead fuel pump had trouble pulling through thr filter before the pump
Does sound like dist. but how much fuel pressure are you running? I have 2- 97's and run 2lbs. Stock fuel pumps put out much more.
Mine is similar, just ones an a while it studders, have now change from new mallory to an old one. Have just started it inside the garage, but sound much smoother, even at idle .................................... Taildragger&fenderless
Oh sh@! I screwed up! I put a 6 volt coil in with a resister which it said it didnt need, then I had a 12v coil with no resister which I should of had.stock distrubuter,Anyway 12v coil with a resister=much better runnin flattie Bubbas speedshop pointed the coil thing, and they sold me an american made coil.Plus I think Im kinda under carbed, a little of each is a pain. Thanks everyone!
I think Im gonna buy a mallory dist. next month. I always said I'd keep points forever on my shovel till I switched to a dyna ign. and it runs great all the time.
