i have what i was told is a 302 .should have come out of a early 70s ford car or maybe a 67-69 mustang.it has the big spark plugs and uses the 351 firing order.has a 2 br carb ,but you can tell someone changed the intake and carb .paint dont match and wont start with the firing order stamped on the intake.could this be a boss motor?oh ya the order fires counter clock wise.
A boss has screw in freeze plugs.. First off, look by where the starter is (pass side), and theres a casting # there. If you pull the intake, it should say the motor size in the lifter valley. Also if you pull the valve covers, it will say 289, 302, or 351 on the head.. Boss motors were in the Early 70's. Could be a 351W motor, if its a 69 year its a good one. 351W and 302 intakes dont interchange. It could be a late manifold on an early motor? Whats the casting # on the intake?????
http://www.aacncclub.com/ this one has casting number info on just about every car made http://www.gearheadracing.com/Reference/Ford/CastingNumbers/FordCastingNumbers.htm this one has lots of info on ALL casting number for all types of ford motors
How wide is the intake? A 302 is 8.5" wide- measured from the cl of the bolts. A 351w is about 1" wider. A Boss is a Clevland motor. They look totaly differnt from a Windsor motor. http://www.boss351.org/engine.htm . It could have a cam with the 351w firing order in it. You can run either firing order, you just have to make sure the plug wires are hooked up in the right sequence.
Sounds like you have a 289 or 302 Windsor engine with a 351 Windsor camshaft. I say this because the intake manifolds of a long deck 351W will not interchange with the shorter deck 289-302 engines. The 351W intake is much wider. So you can determine the engine by matching the firing order on your intake. However, you must have a 351W camshaft if it runs on the 351 firing order but not the 289-351 firing order. The camshafts do interchange if you match the firing order to the camshaft. A common trick for 351W guys is to use the 289-302 aftermarket camshafts (cheaper and more pletiful) by changing the firing order to match. Sounds like someone did the opposite with your engine and used the 351w camshaft and firing order in a 289-302. A couple of ways to tell with out opening up the motor are: 1. The 5/8" Alternator bolt bolt directly into the head on 289-302 engines. Since the 351W has a taller deck, this bolt cannot go into the head. So 351W have an aluminum adapter that bolts to the head to lower the mounting point of the 5/8" alternator bolt. 2. I know the head bolts are larger on the 351W. I don't remember the sizes, but I know you cannot use 289-302 heads on a 351W without drill the headbolts larger and you must use washers under the headbolts to use 351W heads on the 289-302W engine. Hope this helps!
yup. The 351w (and H.O. 5.0) order is better though. It doesnt load the front main as much. The 302 order has cylinders 1 and 5 firing right in a row. I ran a 351w grind in my 289. But now I'm putting together a 331 with a roller .
