  2. Something European, I would think. Do they say, "LUCAS" on the top of the bucket?

  3. Is that car one of those fibreglass GAZELLE kits with the VW beetle engine ? Anyhow those little latches on top don,t belong there and the big ugly black mounting brackets certainly don,t belong there.

I think you are dead on about that being a Gazelle or equivalent. It appears to me the 'ugly black bracket', may be the remnants of another old headlight housing, cut away to form a 'bracket' for the shiny one. The whole works needs replacement, IMO.

  6. I,ll have another stab at it. The black rear bucket seems to be the body of a standard sealed beam unit which you can see through the front glass which looks like bathroom window smoked glass. Just maybe the large outer ring and bigger bucket are French " MARCHAL " but it looks more like a load of parts that just happen to fit together. Sorry for being negative.

Is that a 1970s Gazelle kit car?

  9. Yeah....fake Mercedes Excaliber or something, but they usually use Lucas lamps.

Well....that'll be easy enough. The OP's friend just needs to locate a set from an old RR Drophead and he'll be in business ......:D

  12. actually a quite clever combo. look way better than a pair of snow plow lights you usually see on those kits.
op, does he want to change them or get better version? i think he should fix those up.

This is sort of an 'Edit' to my earlier comments about this perhaps being a fiberglass 'Gazelle body on a VW platform.
31Dodger mentioned it might be an Excaliber and that prompted me to take a second look.....and I think he may be correct (as usual on ID'ing things). While an Excaliber is not a HAMB friendly vehicle, they are not to be dismissed as the same as or similar to the Gwagen.

Brooks Stevens, who has many significant car designs to his credit DID do ersatz '29/'30 era Mercedes Benz SSK replicas built on a Studebaker chassis with Corvette power train. This was, as I recall, mid to late '60's thru early '70's. I have seen them a few times, not the least of which was at the Brooks Stevens Museum in WI, now closed I think. The 2 seater Excaliber was much better looking than the later 4 passenger version, IMO.

If that is what the OP posted, then HAMB friendly or not, it does deserve a decent set of headlights.

  16. The Brooks Stevens car used different lights and was better built than the car in question. Excalibur2.jpg
