Hello, I have a 1961 chevy truck that I have been struggling for years to id. It is 4 wheel drive but the vin is 2 wheel. I bought if from a guy that states he used to drive it in the air force and it was used to dolly air planes. His story is that the base had dirt roads so they used jeeps to transport people but needed a heavier truck to move supplies and air planes ect. Further he states that they contracted jeep/willys to design a 4x4 system for it. I cannot locate any parts online that resemble the divorced transfer case. Any help would be greatly appriciated. If it helps the vin indicates that the production plant was Australia... I know the pictures are hard to see because i just went wheeling.
looks like original early 60s Chevy 4x4 stuff to me. What is it that you think is not original? http://www.desert-skies.net/60carryall.htm
Well all the brake hardware and shoes are listed as a 59-62 jeep... the transfer case is different than the 60s chevy, ill post a pic of the chevy one and sorry again that its so muddy but you can see how my yokes dont match up.
If you look at his front end it will have traditional hold down springs holding the shoes in the center, notice there are not holes in the shoes for that
Had a 61 4x4 many years ago but it looks like I remember mine. Same 6 hole wheel, same adjusting cams on each brake shoe. same sloppy lever to engage the transfer case, tall spring blocks on the rear. But it's been about 40 years !! Jeep, GM and others may have sourced parts from the same supplier.
pic of the transfer case, but exploded so it's challenging to figure it out. Input yoke is top, rear output is bottom center. The front brakes do look strange. Can you take a picture of the front differential? The rear differential looks like normal Chevy truck 55-62 design.
Some things on Jeep and those old GM closed knuckle front ends are the same. The seal kit for the closed knuckle, as well as the bearings/races for the spindle pivot are the same. I don't know if the backing plate bolt holes would be the same. If yes, maybe someone swapped them? If the truck is US military, there should be plenty of tags or whatever, someplace on it
