Could anyone help me identify what year my Caddy 331 engine is, or suggest where I can find a decoder. I have not been able to find one that helps. The person I bought the engine from said it was a rebuilt 54, but now I have my doubts. The stamped engine ID/VIN number located on the front right of the block just below the head reads 546279904. The raised cast number in the rear top center of the extended block reads 1460704. The heads and intake manifold I believe are 49-51. I am hoping it is a 54 with 49-51 heads and intake manifold. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

  2. the coding on the block means its a 1954 series 62 and number 79,904 built that year. I will check the info for the heads when I can get to my books this evening.
the water pump will also have a cast number on it. whatever 2 numbers it starts with is the year of the casting. ie: 54xxxx means 1954.

Thank you Slik! Im relieved its a 54. The water pump cast number is 1461288. The right head(under the valve cover) reads 1454022-3. Thanks again for your help

  4. lets see. according to the book the head casting number should be 363 0458 for the RH and the LH is 363 0455. but it appears that the replacement heads were using 146 XXXX-X numbers. from '49 thru '59 all the cylinder head used a casting number starting with 363. as for the water pump casting, '49-mid '52 used the casting number 145 9626 and '54 used 363 0452. but lists no other years.

according to the hollander books, the casting number is 3630518 for '49-'55.
now i am even more confused. but I am sure on the engine ID. those used to match the actual vin number of the car. and both books confirm that.
sorry can't help much on the head ID.
