Picked up this beautiful Axle a couple weeks ago at a Swapmeet, for an upcoming project. First, it's in great condition, whomever redid kingpins and wheel bearings did a great job. So I think it's a 1937 V8-60 with 42-46 Square back spindles (except the passenger side only has one tie rod hole). and the "Wheel Hubs"? they are 5 on 5 1/2 but have odd bearing caps, that have the threads inside the hub. Any help appreciated. Thats a 46 axle in a few pictures for reference.
I think they are ‘46-‘48. Didn’t the earlier hydraulic drums mount inside the hub? Upon further review it appears I have it backwards. Carry on.
It seems only 1940 used the screw-in grease caps and a unique 7/16" kingpin locking pin/steering stop. I turned down to fit.
It was the so-called V8-60 tube axle that was different, not that later spindles are unique. The tube axle was introduced in ‘37, the spindles you have are ‘42-48’s, king pins for the V8-60 axle had a radius milled into them for round retainers and those were smaller (7/16”) diameter. To use regular’37-‘41, or the longer ‘42-‘48 king pins most guys drilled the axle for the 9/16” diameter wedge type retainers.
